 Very interesting site Kevan. My gt grandmother, Ann Spratling was born at the Bell and Anchor in Sandwich,Kent, although her birth certificate doesn't mention it by name. Simply says High St,Sandwich, father Licensed Victualler.

Also have a transcribed copy of a letter sent by her grandmother to her son in Australia. " Thursday March 1 1854(?). Robert Knowles has left the Bell and Anchor, and so George took it off him, and he is doing pretty well at present. But it is early days and he took it over at the worse time of the year for the winter has been pretty bad this last six weeks, the river has been frozen over nearly all the time, that has been so against him, but when we write again we may tell you more about it. He has been there about ten weeks......., Love to you both Mother"

   Glad you like the site. I am quite pleased with it too. The details you mention sound excellent as copy for the relevant pages, if that is ok? I don't actually have a great stack of Kent data, so anything is very welcome.
  I know Kent fairly well, but  the name changes in districts are causing me some headaches at the moment.

 It's an interesting site, you will find under history some information about past and present pubs in Sandwich.

There was one called The Two Brewers in The Butchery, about 1900 it was run by a formidable lady called Louisa Maria Warman. She also ran the soup kitchen for the poor of the town for the council. Apparently she wouldn't let anyone sleep in her beds unless they'd had a bath first because of lice etc! Louisa was the gt gt grandmother of a friend of mine.

By 1891 my gt gt grandfather George Spratling was no longer at the Bell and Anchor. He had spent some time in the Lunatic Asylum, in fact had been suffering from senile decay,( dementia?) and was lodging at the Bricklayers Arms in Strand St, Sandwich. The landlord was Charles Fagg.

Yes fantastic site Kevan well done

I found my ancestors running the Locomotive Inn in Beaver Rd Sth Ashford. It seems they ran it for a quite a long period of time passing down the generations.
I would like to know if it is still standing today.

               I was hoping you could tell me! I added 700 pages for Kent this week, and an extra 500 that were linked into the site. I am not getting big-headed about this, but it is a mammoth task adding a new area, and I am knackered.
              Glad you like the site. All info appreciated, and particularly pictures.

Well,
       I have just ordered a few Kent Historical CD, (NOT for lookups, though, I promised). They are running a half price sale at Archivecd http://www.rod-neep.co.uk/ at present. I received a few Essex & London CD today, they are brilliant.
      The http://londonpublichouse.com site will update as I have time, though; but should be good in months to come for the Kent area.
