Buckham's Lane North Shields -COMPLETED THANKS

Can anyone help me with the location of Buckham's Lane which appears on the 1841 census for North Shields, Tynemouth.

I have tried to find it on old online maps without success. I have a recent AA UK map so if anyone is able to place it relative to current streets that will be a help

Hi Pauline,

If you could give us the Reference from the 1841 census (or the names you're looking for), we could perhaps place where the Lane is from looking at the surrounding streets.

Buckhams Ln. was towards the south west corner of North shields near to the river. it was lane that branched off Dotwick street at no. 39 and was to the left of Ropery banks
Forster, Hall, Yielder ,Robson, Corbridge and st John lee/ parishes.  also researching Harmison/Harmieson. have lots of info on above

I had a look for this location on the map but could find neither Dotwick St or Ropery Banks. I did find a reference to Ropery Banks in relation to an iron bridge so I think it was near New Quay and perhaps in the vicinity of Borough Rd. Is this roughly right or am I barking up the wrong tree.

From my reading, and a look at Google Earth, it seems that there were two levels at North Shields - riverbank and high banks above, hence the names of the Banks I'm guessing. Is this right?

I have Isabella Gilhespy living at Buckham's Lane from 1832 to 1841 census and I think it may be her death I now have at Ranters Bank

OBviously will need to get an old Ordnance Survey map but will take time to get to Australia

Just by the Iron bridge over Borough Rd  is the ruins of St Peters Church which was the Parish Church until after 1900.  The Ropery Banks was a warren of Streets leading on to Clive St and New quay   Must have been there.

Thanks John -I appreciate your help. I found a reference to it on Tomorrow's HIstory but the number codes are blurred in the digital copy so have still been having problems. I see this whole area is now being redeveloped into a modern residential area. How times change -the ancestors would be amazed!

In the "OLD DAYS" the coppers used to have a hand barrow to wheels up Borough Road to the "nick" in Saville St.,  when the drunks were past it from the New Quay, Chain Locker Pub and Others.    At one time the Police Chief who was in charge of the Fire Service as well sold a Fire Engine and bought a horse to ride around on?
