Whose child and where did he go?!?

Ive followed my SHARPs back to the 1851 census but this census has me stumped! I can't get any further back, nor can i find the all important marriage date for the couple!

1851 census   HO107/1809   37

Coast Guard Cottages, Cromer, Norfolk

James Sharp  Head  age 35  Boatman (and) Cst Guard, born Ealing, Middlesex
Susannah Sharp, Wife, age 27, born Weymouth, Dorset
Mary Gray, Mother in Law, Wid, age 65, (I can't make out place of birth)
Martin Wm Barry, Stepson, age 9, Scholar, born Whitstable, Kent
Jas H Sharp, Son, age 6, Born Kent (cant make out where in Kent!)
Elizth Mary do, Dau, age 5, born do do
Jn Willm do, Son, age 3, born Dorset (??) Island?
George do, Son, age 9 mon, born Norfolk, Cromer

My problem is that i cannot find a marriage for Susannah and James, nor is there any trace of Martin Wm Barry after or before this census, and i do not know to whom he belongs!!

The IGI has some details of Susannah and James, but nothing certain, think a lot are member submissions and not directly from the PRs.

Any help would be brilliant!

Hi,

Is it possible that Susannah was married before and had Martin before she married James.

There is a marriage on Freebmd in Blean, Kent (which covers Whitstable) in 1843

I can't find Martin Wm on any other census nor a death for him. Now im wondering whether he may have gone under the name Sharp after the 1851. He would have been 19 by the 61 census, so possibly married or working away from home.

Susannah should be a GRAY on first marriage, unless Mother-in-law remarried.

Hi Emma,
I'm afraid I can't help with your Sharps, but just thought I'd mention that my GGG grandfather William DAY (b1794) was a coastguard and was stationed at Cromer from 1840 to 1853.  My GG grandfather Robert DAY (b1824) was also a coastguard, stationed at Cromer from 1848 until 1856, so our ancestors were probably neighbours and colleagues.

I know this doesn't help you, but I was struck by the coincidence!

You are inded correct Caz!! I've just looked again at my 1851 census copy and your ROBERT DAY is living 2 households away from my Sharps!!
