Grattan Stinson Hardy - COMPLETED
« on: Sunday 26 August 07 15:24 BST (UK) »
I am trying to find the death of Grattan Stinson Hardy - born 1861 in Kensington, London.  I have him in the UK censuses up to and including 1901, but no sign of a death!  He was the son of Julia Clifford and George Hardy. In the censuses he is either a tailor or "living on his own means".  He had two brothers, one of whom Lewis Rossi Hardy emigrated to New Zealand and died there. I cannot find Grattan in NZ.  The other brother Dudley Clifford Hardy died in Portsea.

I think he MIGHT have emmigrated to Canada - I would be very grateful if someone could do a look-up for me.

I thought that with such an odd name he would be easy to find - but no!

Many thanks for any help

Why did you think he may have immigrated to Canada? Do you have some correspondence from him, and if so from what province?

If you have an idea where he could have been living, it would be easier. (BMD's are different for each province)

I checked the 1911 Census, Western Land Grants (1870-1930) and could not find him in either.

I could not see him on "Find my Past", but there were 3 - G.S. Hardy's listed. 2 of them could not be him according to his birth year, but the other shows no age.

G.S. HARDY
MALE
DEPARTED: 1907
PORT OF DEPARTURE: LONDON
PORT OF ARRIVAL: BOMBAY INDIA

1911 Census - Canada
http://www.automatedgenealogy.com/

On the Freebmd site, there is a marriage in the last quarter of 1915, of a "Gordon" S. Hardy to a Veronica H.B. Rimmington, in Kensington. I thought that might be worth looking at.

Also a G.S. Hardy who died during 1st World War. (No age given)

Sorry I couldn't be of more help.

Hello Janice
I thought he might have gone to Canada as on Ancestry.com there is a Grattan Hardy shown on a passenger list for Nova Scotia and then in the Immigrant Archives for Canada. As I no longer have the international subscription, I can't look any further..........
It seems such an unusual name, that I thought it could be him!
Many thanks for all your help - I'll look into  the info you have given me.

I just noticed that myself. Unfortunately, I don't have a subscribtion either. I will snoop around some of the provinces that have information available, and hopefully, someone with a subscription to "Ancestry" will be able to tell you.

Here is what I found for Hardy's moving to Canada and arriving in Halifax. There were 2 years, 1910 & 1919. On the National Archives Canada site, you can search manifests for free, but they are not transcribed. I have given the links to the 2 ships and all of their arrivals for the 2 years. (Just follow the below links, then click on name of ship and then .. You will have to search page by page.)

Last name: Hardy (including variants) Hardie
First name(s):
Year of departure: 1919
Departure port: Liverpool
Ship name: Carmania
Destination country: Canada
Destination port: Halifax

If you do find him on the manifests, it should give where he intended to live. If you let us know, we can then search for him in that City/Province.

Happy Hunting!  ;D :P

Bonjour Janice!
Again - many thanks for all your hard work!  My hunting will probably have to wait until Wednesday as I have to work today - but I'll let you know if I find him.
Best regards
Tilly :)
