Cottage, Unwin Families

Is anyone researching various COTTAGE families from around Linton? Specifically, I'm trying to find John Unwin who married Harriet Cottage. Thanks -they're an elusive pair, put their kids made it out to Australia.

Could you just tell us what you know? I see they married in 1844. Do you have the marriage cert? Do you know their children's names and when they emigrated?

That was quick! My data is on another computer at the moment, so I'm relying on memory.

Their son Samuel was born around 1846ish, and Elizabeth was born a couple of years later. The kids appear on the 1851 census as living with their grandfather James Cottage. Samuel came out to Australia when he was 18, and Elizabeth came in 1896 as a widow, with her 5 children. (She married Amos Swan)

Do you have the 1841 census for Harriett yet?

I see Samuel is in London in 1861. Elizabeth is still with her grandfather, and Harriet seems to be there as well - do you already have it?

The parish records show Samuel George being baptised in 1845 but nothing for Elizabeth. John and Harriet married in 1844 and the witnesses were Richard Morley and Martha Unwin.

The Cottage family can be traced back further - Harriet was daughter of James - but there are very few Unwin entries in the Parish Records - John was son of Samuel - on CAMDEX it can be seen that both Samuel and Elizabeth's births are just included as male Unwin 1845 and female Unwin 1847. A male Unwin was also registered as a death in 1844 aged 0.

Harriet Unwin was buried in 1861 aged 46 but nothing for John?

Both of you have uncovered bits of information I hadn't found! Thank you for your efforts.

Tati, is there any sign of John Unwin, son of Samuel, in the 1841 census (and where do you access that info, please).

Corcam, it is always a delight to have a deathdate for an elusive ancestor! Can you please tell me where you find that date.Is there any sign of John? I have found Harriett and John's marriage, and always feel cranky that recorders in the good old days didn't think it important to put the mother's name in.

Can anyone tell me if you get the birthdates on Cambridgeshire marriage records? Do you get more info than what you can get from Camdex?

I can't see John at all, anywhere! I don't suppose you know his birthplace and age?

Hi Kerryn,

You can get more dates if you apply for the certificate. The dates I found from the Linton Parish Records but there is no sign of John or on Camdex (which is found through www.cambridgeshire.gov.uk) - you can apply for the certificates directly from them.

Linton is in Cambridgeshire and it borders Essex. Hadstock is in Essex and is a neighbouring village, many villagers moved between the two and therefore there could be more details information there. I believe Harriet was born in Hadstock.
