where to go from here??
« on: Saturday 25 August 07 10:28 BST (UK) »
Hi all

I have my line back to 1739 with the birth of my 6x Gt grandfather THOMAS SWIFT. He was baptised at St Mary's  in Scarborough, the son of Thomas Swift.

I have scoured the registers for links to his father but it seems that the family have come form elsewhere.

The earliest baptisms are my 6x gt grandfather THOMAS in 1739 and a sister, FRANCES in 1741. There seem to be no other baptism for any siblings and none before either. There is no marriage either for their parents in the registers.

I cannot find a burial either for the father, THOMAS. The earliest Swift burial is for an ANN SWIFT in 1760, so im taking this as a possible wife.

I do not know where to go next, any ideas or advice would be greatly appreciated!!

Liam

Hi,

Just a thought - are the records of the overseers of the poor available for the parish of St Mary's Scarborough? You may find a reference there to a settlement examination when Thomas senior moved into the parish or some reference to a settlement certificate from the parish from which he came. It's a long shot, but worth asking what records other than parish registers the Record Office holds.

Hope that helps,

Hi Liam

Just read your post, I have no connection to your Swifts, But have a lot of Shaws, in my tree from around the Whitby, area.

Just wondered who you are looking for in the Shaw, family.

Regards Kathc

John:  Thankyou for the advice! That is a brilliant idea, I didn't even think of that one!! Fingers crossed the records are there and my family are in there! The Swifts were fairly poor so if they did move they would surely have had to have a settlement examination! Thankyou!

Kathc:  The SHAW I have in my tree is HANNAH SHAW born Whitby abt 1840. She married JOSEPH HURD in 1861 in Hartlepool. She was the daughter of JOHN SHAW. a weaver.

I shall have a look through my notes and let you know what other information I have, and hopefully we could find a connection!

Hi Liam

I have had a look at the Hannah Shaws in my tree, and the closest one was born in Moorsholm, 1838.

Her parents, my 3x Great Grandparents, where David Shaw, and Ann Robinson.

I do not know who she married.
