« on: Friday 24 August 07 21:11 BST (UK) »
Hi,

Iam researching more Info on my Maternal Great Great Great Grandfather:

William Amess/Amos/Amiss
b 1822 South Shields, bapt 13.3.1822 St Hilda's Church, South Shields.
Son of Samuel and Elizabeth Amess, nee Cooper.

William was a Mariner all of his working life his Father was also a mariner.

William Married Elizabeth Gray at St Hilda's Church, South Shields on 12th August 1846.
They had the Following Children:

Elizabeth Amess b 1846 South Shields, bapt 13.10.1846 at St Hilda's Church, South Shields she married Jonas Reinholdt Nordbrandt on 19th December 1866 at St Hilda's Church, South Shields.

William Amess b 25th September 1852 at Harrison's Court, South Shields he married Margaret Bix on 26th October 1874 at St Hilda's Church, South Shields.

William Amess senior who was the Husband of Elizabeth Gray i assume became a widower pre1861.

as follows:

1861 Census
RG9/3794 Folio 80 Page 53

4 Henderson Lane, South Shields.

Barbara Amess, Mariner's Wife, Marr, 28, South Shields

William Amess, Scholar, Son, 8, South Shields

Ann Amess, Daughter, 11months, South Shields

1881 Census - cornwallis square, westoe, south shields.

1891 Census - 1 forster street, gateshead.

Any help regarding any info of above I would be most gratefull

mostly for info on William's 2nd wife Barbara and the Death of his first wife Elizabeth Gray.

Hi

Here is a bit of information.....

Possible Death Registrations

1858 South Shields AMJ quarter 10a 260

Elizabeth Amess

or

1859 South Shields AMJ quarter 10a 290

Elizabeth Amess

In 1871 they are at RG10/5032 Folio 17 Page 27, still at 5 Cornwallis Square but the mother is (mistakenly ?) listed as Ann. Please let me know if you need the details.

There is a (belated) Possible Marriage Registration.....

from http://freebmd.org.uk/

1864 Gateshead JFM quarter 10a 701

William Amoss
Barbara Bennett

Confirmed here http://online.gateshead.gov.uk/bmd/default.aspx

This may not be the correct one, of course, but I cannot see another William Am* and Barbara pairing from 1858 onwards in the North East.

There is a Barbara Bennett born c1832 on the 1851 census working as a Domestic Servant. She also seems to appear in 1841 with parents and siblings. She does not appear as such on the 1861 census which would fit with her appearing as Barbara Amess (even if not actually married then).

It might be necessary to gamble with the Marriage Certificate and hope that parents names etc check out.

Possible Death Registrations (from FreeBMD again)

1892 Gateshead AMJ quarter 10a 501

William Amos Aged 69

1897 Gateshead OND quarter 10a 482

Barbara Ann Amos Aged 61

The age seems a bit out but whoever reported her death may not have known exactly how old she was. It is the only registration for a Barbara in the region that looks as if it could be the correct one. The middle name is also interesting in relation to the 1871 census entry.

My Great Great Grandmother was Barbara Bennetts.  I guess we are distant relatives.  What would you like to know?.  On the 1881 census, they are listed as AMESS, the youngest daughter Barbara was my Great Grandmother.
My Great Grandmother Barbara married a man called Fenton and they had four children.  Nellie, Lily, Barbara and William.  This was a second marriage for Fenton as his wife had died young leaving him with several children and a first marriage for Barbara when she was 31 years old.  As I am looking at my great grandmothers marriage certificate she states that her father is deceased and she gives his occupation as Merchant Navy - Master Marineer.
My Great Grandmother - the youngest Barbara on the 1881 census as said married and had four children of her own.

Nellie Fenton was the eldest and she was my grandmother.  She married twice.  Firstly a Paul Frederick Morton (Sunderland) and they had two children.
Sylvia Ethel Morton born 31st October 1928
William  Paul Morton born 23rd April 1931 who was my father.
There was two children by another marriage Gloria and Beryl Coulson by Ralph Coulson.  Barbara also married twice and had two children Tommy and Marjery Iveson. Lily had one child Wilfred Monk and William moved to Australia and had three children.  Barbara who married Tommy Iveson moved to London and she died only 3 years ago aged 986. Sorry that should read 96 years. William Fenton actually took the place in real life of Douglas Bader on one of his escapes and took his place in the bed while he escpaed from the germans in world war 2. I do know that my great grandmother Barbara is buried in Saltwell Park in Gateshead.
