Just to say thanks a million I got birth record of my gt gt grandfather from Basel archives. I was wondering whether there are census records I can look up too !

Unfortunately, although a census has been taken in Switzerland since 1850, strict anonymity is guaranteed by law, and only statistics are published - no names, households, etc.  :(

Have you looked for the family on FamilySearch?  They seem to have quite a lot of records for Basel, so you might be lucky there.
