Nelsons in West Derby 1841
« on: Monday 20 August 07 17:51 BST (UK) »
 :)
Can anyone look up a Maria Nelson for me, who I found on the 1841 census in West Derby?  She states age 22.  I don't know if it is my gt gt grandmother, but it looks like the best bet, if her father is Thomas.
Thanks  Alliheat

Thank Slaw and Carolew
The information is of great help.  Yes, Carolew these are the marriages of my Maria, I have followed this line, but it stops at Horsfall, because I found that her son - my gt grandfather was registered with no father's name.  I've been battling with this for some years, before deciding to follow the Nelson line.  The information you provided is useful
Thanks a million

Hi

Something slightly odd

The 1841 census was taken on 6.6.1841.  The 1841 shows Maria was Maria Nelson - if it's the right entry.   Ancestry have it as Mary and the Liverpool FHS transcription on their 1841 index is Marion.  It's not a very clear entry.

Now - the marriage I found to James Bingham took place in the March quarter of 1841 so the marriage was between 1.1.1841 and 31.3.1841 - 2 months before the 1841 census so why was she Nelson?

I've checked the 1841 under Bingham and there's nothing.  I've also checked the image and there is no James Bingham entry on the same page as "Maria" (unless he was possibly a mariner)

Lancashire BMD have an incorrect surname on the 1843 marriage-they show the re-marriage as Birmingham which is why I thought it was 2 different Maria's.  The GRO index does confirm it as Bingham

Thank CaroleW
The information you found for Maria Nelson was what I followed through her marriages to Bingham and Horsfall.  We all thought Thomas Horsfall was our gt grandfather !! what a shock!!! Having looked at the marriage certificate she states widow and he stated pensioner, but that could mean many things.  He states he was a mariner. I can't find any record of his death.   Her father's occupation is also mariner.  I am sooo -- lost with this family research.  It has been the hardest one of all my family histories.
Thanks a million for the help
