Hi

I'm told that my ancestors, the Scott family, owned a farm in a part of Armagh which came to be known as Scott's Corner. Apparently it's on the Newry Road, near to Markethill. Can anybody confirm or deny this please?

Could it by any chance be Scotch Corran, which is the unofficial name for the Townland of Corran in the Parish of Lisnadill?

? Scotch Corran and Irish Corran are marked on the Ordance Survey map. Scotch Corran is on the B31 from MArmagh to Newtownhamilton, just South of the junction with the B3 Markethill/Keady road. RosemaryJoan

P.S. There are quite a few Scotts living in the Parish of Lisnadill in Griffith's Valuation. RosemaryJoan

I've been doing a bit of Googling, and there is a Scott's Corner bus stop on the route from Tandragee and Lurgan. Has anybody heard of this, can it be the same place? It does seem unlikely...

Hello Rob,

Both Translink/Ulsterbus and the people who live in the locality know of Scott's Corner. I doubt that it is the place about which you are enquiring but I'm almost certain that there are a few such places that John Broderick (aka SeanRuad) was unable to include in his IreAtlas site before he passed away on April 7, 2001. Translink/Ulsterbus drivers might know of another Scott's Corner on the Newry - Markethill Road.

I have been in touch with Ulsterbus/Translink who contacted the Portadown Depot to see if they could throw any light on the subject but they only know of the Scott's Corner you found on the internet.

All I can say at the moment is don't rule out the possibility of another place with the same name.

There is nothing on my map on the B3 Tandragee/Markethill Road, nor on the B28 Markethill/Newry Road, but an even more detailed map might help. My maps are only 'Discoverer' OS maps and I don't have a 'proper' Ordance Survey one. RosemaryJoan

The Scotts corner you mention near Lurgan is on the Sugar Island Road near Bleary. The surrounding townlands are Bleary, Drumgask ,Moyraverty etc.
Scotts farm still stands. It is directly opposite Deans Road. To my knowledge it was built in the early 1850's. Unfortunatley it has been lying vacant for approx a year but it still owned by members of the Scott Family. The past occupant, (Mr W Scott) died just before the Summer. I have a map of the Moyraverty area from the early 1850's but I cannot pinpoint the house on it due to the new road layout of Craigavon.

My name is Priscilla Anderson (nee Scott). I am the daughter of Gordon and Peggy Scott from Annacramp, otherwise known as Scott's Corner. This is 2.5 miles from Armagh on the Loughgall Road. My brother still lives on the farm today and it is widely known as Scott's Corner.

My Grandfather was James Scott.
