work house in bradford

 can anyone tell me how i might find a list of occupants of the bradford union work house in 1928

How close to being what we would call a hospital had it become in 1928? By this time I believe that they were more likely to be providing shelter for the elderly rather than their earlier function of housing for the impoverished of all ages.

One needs to understand when the first threads of the welfare state came into existance to get a feel to its use 1928 to 1949.

Did it become a hospital in 1949 with the NHS as was the case with most workhouses?

Remember this is still living history, there are people alive who will know more than I can guess at.

Have you tried the City/County Records Office. If it is an NHS facility they may have some records, but not likely as patient records get weeded out if they are inactive for a period of time.

thanx for the info i have had a look and it is really interesting
my nan was put in a work house when she was born as her mother died giving birth to her and her dad was in the forces her dad came to collect her when she was 2 or 3

My great great great grandfather was in Bradford workhouse when he died in 1908.  From what I can remember, I think my mum wrote to them, and they said they could only release the records after 100 years, so unfortunately it might be like trying to get blood out of a stone, but it's still probably worth persevering.
