Conclusions:

The two Mumford children, on reaching their teens, took the surname Newton.

Charles John Newton, and Charles James Mumford used their middle names once Charles Nicholas Saunders arrived on the scene.

I was trying to find a 1st wife for Richard Saunders ... I was thinking that she was maybe a'Nicholas' as both boys had the same middle name .... to no avail ...maybe I should recheck ...maybe they were married earlier than their first child, Charles Nicholas Saunders . CN Saunders was 9 in the 1881 census, so born abt 1873....

maybe I should look for children born prior to 1873 with Nicholas Saunders as part of their name ...

ummmm

Hi Liz and val and everyone  :)

Okay , I am even having trouble finding birth registrations;

I think these may be correct:
Annie Maud T SANDERS Dec q 1877 Plymouth
Nicholas Charles T SANDERS june q 1871 plymouth (why did he swap his name around ...that is if he is the correct Sanders/Saunders  :-\)

I cannot find George Nicholas SAUNDERS/SANDERS  ...ummmm  just rechecked 1881 census ...sorry I made a mistake George Nicholas Saunders was 5 and not 3, so born 1876 (I was thinking that Alice maud and George Nicholas were twins as I had them both as 3 years old in 1881 ooops sorry ! :-[ )

still not able to find George's birth

anyway ..I have to cook dinner , I must admit I don't want to , I would rather be sniffing around a mystery LOL  ;D

Just looking through the dates again. I reckon none of the Saunders children are Mary's (Charles, William, George, and Annie Maud) but all his children from a previois marriage. She took them all on early in 1881, but then he dies!!! none of the Saunders children seem to stay with her by 1891, they are all resonably grown up, so may have made their own way in the world, or they may have gone to live with other Saunders rellies after their father's death, not having been with Mary and her brood long enough to have bonded with them as family.

If you take the Saunders children out of the equation, it leaves:
George, Sarah and Charles Newton
then married Mumford 1873
has Agnes and Charles Mumford
then briefly married Saunders in 1881 and takes on his brood just over the census time
then marries Bennet in 1881
has Jane, John, edith, Alfred and Nellie.

Still complicated, but I think .... well ... maybe... it is just a little.... a very little....clearer in my own mind!
