BISSETT/PERKIN 1841-1871

I had another thread but I thought I'd start one anew as this is the same line but different people. And some people only look at unanswered threads (well that's what I was told anyway).

William BISSETT and Susanna PERKIN.

They have 3 children:

Susan BISSETT - 1816
William BISSETT - 1818
John BISSETT - 1822

I'm wanting to know approximate dates of births, occupations (for parents)...any tidbit in the census that may help me with my search.

The kids were all baptised at Monkleigh, Bideford, Devonshire, England.

I have found a William and Susanna married on 14 May 1812 in Alverstoke, Hampshire, England. Which is where I found Susanna's surname, i.e. Perkin.

Any help appreciated.

I have an ancestry account now and I too can't find them. The parents may have been alive in 1841. Perhaps William and John died? Their daughter Susan is my ancestor so she definitely stayed alive, and I've found her in the census.

Where is Susan , your Rellie in the census ...who did she marry and when and where ...they have me baffled although I did find a family with William and Hannah(short for Susannah?) with kids that matched the dates ...but even more kids ....

Susan married Jeremiah POPHAM in Abt. 1835. She was born in Bideford, Devon, England and was christened there on 27 Dec 1812. I can find her with her husband and children in 1841 - 1871.

A Susan/Susanna Bissett b 1784 "widow" was transported to Tasmania in 1834 together with her daughter Mary Perkin "single" b 1806. Their native places were Crediton and "near Bideford".

I suspect they have a Monkleigh connection but have only just caome across these folk who I feel must be connected.

Hi This is what I have found out about William and Susanna Bissett from monkleigh Devon .

William Bissett  my four times Great grandfather

William while serving in the Militia Married a Susanna Perkin in Alverstoke Hampshire in 1813.
Susanna was a widow with two girls.

( her first husband was a William Perkin who she had married in Ashburton on the 14th March 1804, while he was serving in the Militia, after they set up home in Monkleigh and started a family,  the two girls were born in the parish,
•   Ann on the 20th January 1805
•   Mary on the 6th December 1807.

I don't know when tragedy struck, but William Perkin must have died, which left Susanna a widow with two girls to raise.)

William Bissett may have known Susanna before, as both, living in Monkleigh and both Williams were serving in the Devonshire Militia, so they may have served together at sometime.
Susanna's maiden name was Martyn and she was born in a small village called Spreyton, which is about 10 miles from Crediton.

Going back to the Marriage of William Bissett and Susanna Perkin (nee Martyn)
They were married on the 14th May 1812 in Alverstoke and Susanna must have stayed up in that area while William continues his service.

Susanna and William was living in West Back Street Dorchester when in 1813 their son Richard was born
( My third Great Grandfather ).

Richard was baptised in the Holy Trinity Church sometime, between 14 – 24 November in 1813, by Rev Henry John Richman.
It also states that William was a private in the North Devon Militia, which confirms why William was in Dorchester at this time.

After William service ends, they return to Monkleigh to settle down to continue family life (Ann and Mary Perkin step daughters and Richard their Son)
It only took a few years and the family started to grow again with the birth of a daughter
•   Susan who was christen on the 18th August 1816
•   William christen on the 30th August 1818
•   John christen on the 21st September 1822
In 1830 , William Bissett, Susanna husband, dies.
This time the family was living in Moorhead Littleham which is on the edge of Littleham Village.
William was only 46 years old when he died; he is buried in the Church yard in Littleham, just South of the main path and across to the right, just passed the main door.
The spot where he is laid, is always will kept, and is very easy to find. The head stone is beside the bush

Susanna was now the head of the family, but this time she had, her daughter Mary Perkin ( aged 23 ) to help keep the family afloat.  They started to run a lodging house together.
Richard now age 17, decided to go and join the Navy
Susan now age 14, William age 12, John age 8 would have lived at home, or could have been apprentice to someone, living in, I don't know.

But on 21st January 1834   Susanna and Mary was charged for receiving stolen goods.

2 gallon of cider, 1 peck of potatoes, 1 peck of apples knowing them to be stolen
This  was found in the Accounts and Papers Volume Nine, relating to Crime
 Session 4th Feb to 14th August 1834

Devon Easter Session, Tuesday April 8th 1834 – William Courtenay Esq., Chairman,
                           Calendar, In the Gaol, Remaining on Former Orders

Susan Bissett – Convicted General Session 1834 – Felony – Transported 7 years
Mary Perkin – Convicted General Session 1834 – Felony – Transported 7 years

   
In the Western Times, and the Exeter and Plymouth Gazette,
                  Saturday, April 19th 1834

Under sentence of Transportation for life

ELIZA SIDMAN, HANNAH DUFFELLS, MARY COUNETT, MARY PARKIN, SUSAN BISSETT and  JANE CANN  were on Friday last removed from the DEVON COUNTY GAOL on their way to WOOLWICH in order to being put on board the ship EDWARD bound for SIDNEY, NEW SOUTH WALES.
WINIFRED THOMAS, THOMAZIN COOMBS,and MARTHA DUNN were removed from the EXETER CITY GAOL in order to be put on the same ship at WOOLWICH.
This Information was taken from EXETER and PLYMOUTH GAZETTE - SATURDAY 19 APRIL 1834 and the WESTERN TIMES.
   
So Susanna and Mary are on their way to Woolwich, to board a prison ship (Edward bound for Van Diemen’s Land in Tasmania Australia)

The Ship Master was E.A.Lindsay
The Ship Surgeon was a Joseph Street

There were 151 Female Prisoners on board and it took 122 sail days to arrive
