Another query, what do you do if you have system hang?  That happened to me last evening and the only option I had was just to turn off the laptop as  nothing else was working.  Strangely when I turned it back on and it sorted itself out, I had a screen message from Firefox stating that the programme had closed unexpectedly and asking if I wanted to go back to where I was (or words to that effect), I clicked on Yes and bingo the websites I had been on, including Rootschat, were reinstated on the exact page I had been on.

I guess you have to power off.  You should always try and see if you can launch Task Manager because there is an option to Shut Down from there.
If you look on the Task Manager tool menu it is the 4th item from the left.  Another trick is to press Ctrl + Esc to see if you can get the Start menu to work.  You can then use the arrow keys to move up to the Turn Off Computer option and press the Return key and the shutdown sequence should begin.

Firefox does remember you last location and should offer to restore your last session in the event of an abnormal shutdown.

is this firefox a free download and if so which bit does one need?  Is it safe and how much space does it take up?

I contacted ISPS yesterday but until I can get someone to put my modem directly into the main phone box they do not want to know!  I cannot do it, so will have to wait for someone to come and help me!  Daft I call it and excuses! excuses!

Firefox is an internet browser from Mozilla that is free.  Some people consider it to be safer than Internet Explorer largely because it does not allow ActiveX components to run, which potentially can allow malware to be downloaded on to a computer.  In terms of disk space:-

My folder C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox occupies 19.2mb.

Whereas C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer occupies 6.38mb.

Both browsers use other folders in C:\Documents and Settings\Your Name\Local Settings

Browsers download files and images called browser cache, IE puts them in Temporary Internet Files and Firefox puts them in Local Settings but uses a database rather than have them as separate files like IE.

If you currently use Internet Explorer and you want to install Firefox it will allow you to import your Favorites during the installation process.  It automatically imports your details (login and Password) from Internet Explorer.

They are trying to eliminate a possible source / cause of your problem Rabbit - by running from the Master Socket, you bypass all the daisy-chain wiring thru secondary sockets, and possible poor connections.

See if a friend or neighbour has an extension lead - guess you cant be that far away from the MSocket, even if you have to route a cable thru the window on a temporary basis ...

Hi Newf,

Have worked in telecoms so had worked that out, but thanks for your advice!  The socket I am working from was BT installed! I don't have daisy chain wiring in this house. pity it might be better!!!

I am going to get  some more connectors though and fiddle with testing those first!  One of them could be faulty, even though I have swapped them round.  So could the actual plugs!  Many possibles to check yet before I call an engineer!

 I do know that such intermittant faults [most difficult to trace] are likely to be internal! so I will probably get an engineer out sometime. 

Strange thing is that several friends are having the same problem but with different servers!  Why are some days worse than others!  There is another anomaly We can't all have duff internal wiring!
