LIVERPOOL PUB NAME - 1861
« on: Thursday 16 August 07 20:40 BST (UK) »
In the 1861 Census one of my ancestors kept a Pub at 59, Parliament Street, Liverpool. In a directory I found there was a "White Horse" in Parliament St. but no street number given. Was the "White Horse" at no. 59, does anybody know? If not, what was at No. 59 and is there still a pub of that name in Parliament Street?

Hi Iria,
Thanks for the confirmation that No. 59 was the "White Horse". Laurence Flood wasn't the name of my ancestor, though. He was Matthew Graty. Obviously he hadn't been there long when the 1861 Census was taken. He didn't stay long, either. When his wife died in 1863 he went back to his former occupation of Plumber. She was the daughter of a Brewer, which may have had something to do with him taking on a Pub in the first place.

Hi Red,
I had a look at the Toxteth website and in particular at the "Pubs" section of it. No mention of a "White Horse" on it, though, or indeed any Pub in Parliament Street. Obviously it no longer exists under any name.

Many thanks to both. Regards,

Hullo -- hope you are still there -- He was my g grandfather -- still have a 1/2 pt pewter tankard -- embelished -- l Flood -- 59 Parliment St -- Liverpool -- on other side a large 2 -- which holds exacty 1/2 pint --  presumably meaning 1 was a pint measure -- sadly dont have that one.
So so hope you are still there
