Trawsfynydd Volunteers???
« on: Thursday 16 August 07 13:48 BST (UK) »
Hello, I was wondering if anyone in the area could tell me who the Trawsfynydd volunteers were? I was on the Gathering the Jewels site and there is a photograph of men in some sort of uniform and all it says is "Trawsfynydd Volunteers 1890" The reason I am asking is because my Great Grandfather is away from home in the census and I found him with loads of other men in Trawsfynydd, they were all living in huts , my G. Taid John Price (from Montgomeryshire) is in Nant Y Lladron Hut with lots of other men. Taid was a Blacksmith and I had just presumed he was working on something in the area at the time.Anybody out there who has any idea what they were volunteering for, I would be very grateful.
Regards
Rosie

Hello Rosie Lewis - I also found an ancestor of my wife missing on the 1881 census from the family home at Llanfachreth - I found him at Trawsfynydd  - William Williams  66 Born Llanfachreth -  General Labourer on Railway - - living at 1,Hengoed Hut,Trawsfynydd with many others.
I assumed that they were building the railway. Does this assist ? hope it does. John Ashley.

Ah, that makes sense! His Father was a railway Blacksmith. I never realised that there was a railway running that way, never thought of that. Wish they would build one round here! Tried to find a way of getting from Machynlleth to Meifod today to do a bit of family grave spotting, was absolutely impossible to get from here to there, would be easier to get to Liverpool from here than to a place up the road! Will have to get myself a car.
Thanks for your help
