Thanks SM,
Yes, unforunately it doesn't take me any further forward on either Samuel or his wife Elizabeth Chapman as their is no mention of parentage or dates of birth.   :(
Thanks anyway.
Bernard

As thet ode gal Suffolk Sue say, thet is a common name around these parts.

Have you tried all the variations of the name around the Sudbury area?  There are Theobolds in some of the north Essex villages too.

Still some Theobald's in the area with the old pronunciation of Tibble/Teeble.

Currently eight researchers for the name Theobald on the Surnames List and one looking in Gt Waldingfield whilst others looking at nearby Lavenham (where the name is still found today) and Glemsford area.

Hi again BAT,

These Theobald PR extracts are from my "Spares" database, probably of dubious value but here goes anyway.

Samuel of Samuel & Elizabeth Theobald baptised at Cavendish 12 Apr 1741.

Samuel Theobald buried at Cavendish 15 Aug 1741, there was no qualifying info attached to this burial in the PRs, i.e. no "son of" or "husband of" etc.

Also found the following Theobald burials at Cavendish:-

Simon Theobald 12 Jan 1741.
John Theobald, Householder, 18 Feb 1749.
Margaret Theobald 16 Apr 1750.
Again, except for John no qualifying info in the PR entries.

There were no doubt other Theobald entries in both the Baptism and Burial PRs, I was on a wild goose chase for a Joseph Harris and only jotted down the Theobald entries as I noticed them.

There was a Samuel Tebbal baptised 27 Nov 1737 in Borley, Essex, of John and Mary, he would have been 35 if he married in 1772, quite a long shot but worth keeping in mind perhaps.  As others have mentioned there were a lot of Theobalds on both sides of the Essex/Suffolk border and no doubt there was significant migration from both sides.  At one stage I was interested in Samuel's brother, John, as a possible candidate for the husband of Elizabeth French but info from this board knocked that idea on the head.

Good luck with your research, it looks as though you are in with a chance with the 1748 Swefling Samuel.

Concentrating currently on:
Essex: Card, Harris, Stowell, Theobald/Tibbles & Turner.
Norfolk: Beale, Cork & Dalton.
Yorkshire: Oswald Sturdy birth/baptism c1708, Oswald where the devil are you?

Thanks findem,
Yes they were a prolific bunch, more Theobald's than tadpoles. Thanks for the info. It looks like a personal visit to Great Waldingfield is going to be required.
Best wishes,
BAT

I am just off to Great Waldingfield - calling on my father  ;)

The Church of St Lawrence is only open from 2 - 4 pm in the afternoon.

You are welcome to give me a call (I will PM you my details) when you decide to come and I will make sure of opening time (or arrange for a keyholder to meet you at the church).

The records for the church are at the SRO in Bury St Edmunds.

Best wishes, SM ...
