Samuel THEOBALD - 1751?
« on: Wednesday 15 August 07 11:56 BST (UK) »
Does anyone have any information re: Samuel Theobald born about 1751, although he was married in Great Waldingfield in 1772 there appears to be no evidence of his birth or baptism there.
He married Elizabeth chapman on 26th July, 1772 - Great Waldingfield, Suffolk
Second wife- Mary Ford - married 17th May, 1785- Great Waldingfield, Suffolk
Third Wife - Jane Frost - married 30th October, 1788

Any help is appreciated.
Bernard

Hi Bernard.
I have had a look at the I G I and have found this.
Samuel Theobald christening 22 February 1748 Swefling Suffolk parents Samuel Theobald and Elizabeth.
Also,
Samuel Theobald christening 25 October 1772 Great Waldingfield Suffolk. Parents Samuel and Elizabeth.
Maybe your Samuel was born in Swefling and had a son called Samuel born in Great Waldingfield.
 Hope this might help.

Hi William,
That is very helpful, thank you.
Samuel Theobald christened 25th October, 1772 was certainly the son of the Samuel Theobald I am researching. It's possible that the Samuel Theobald of Sweflingis our man which is why we can find no record of him in Great Waldingfield prior to his marriage.
I am very grateful for your help.
Best wishes,
Bernard

Sweffling is quite a distance from Waldingfield. Theobald is a common name in and around the villages close to Waldingfield. Your Samuel is probably closer to home. Its a matter of searching parish registers in an ever widening circle from Waldingfield.

Hi Sue,
That is possible. the answer may lie with his bride, Elizabeth Chapman. If she came from Great Waldingfield it may explain why Samuel suddenly appears in Great Waldingfield. I think the distance between Swefling and Great Waldingfield is about 28 miles so not an impossible link.
Best wishes,
Bernard

No its not impossible, just didn't want you to accept that as being the only possibility. Very heartbreaking when you go down the wrong route.

No that's much appreciated.
if I can get a look at the marriage register it should give me his age, place of residence at time of marriage and the name of Samuel's father which would be helpful.
Best wishes,
bernard

Marriages before 1837, when civil registration came in, are very unlikely to give you fathers names or ages. It could say if they were minors or not.
You usually get name of   groom, whether bachelor, spinster or widow/er, the parish they are from at time of marriage (not necessarily birth parish), the vicars name and the witnesses.  You might be lucky with the witnesses, as sometimes they are family members, matter of luck really.

Good luck.
