Hollands - clay pipe makers - Manchester
« on: Monday 13 August 07 23:41 BST (UK) »
Does anyone have any knowledge of the Holland family - tobacco pipe makers?
They lived in Slater Street in 1891 census and Church Lane Harpurhey in 1901.
Where was the factory? How long was it operational?
Any information gratefully received :)

Hi there!

I googled the following:  holland tobacco pipes manchester (without quotes) and found an interesting item about THOMAS HOLLAND of Manchester and his pipes.  Could be your guy.

From 1895 Slaters:

Holland Jos., tobacco pipe maker 23 Blackburn Street, Rochdale road and 41 Fir Street Oldham Road. Res. 68 Chapman Street Oldham Road

http://www.historicaldirectories.org/hd/index.asp

If you have 50 euros to spare there's this book on pipes which mentions Joseph Holland & Sons of Manchester http://www.pijpenkabinet.nl/Pijpenkabinet/boekbespreking-E%20Eeuw.html

Thanks both.
A relative was 'taken in' by the Holland family. She was born Alice Gee in 1896 and she was Alice Holland, grandaughter in the 1901 census, with the Hollands.
Just wondering what happened and why!
Parents were John and Ann Gee, both clay pipe makers in 1891 census, at Wilkinson Street.

Joseph Holland son of the Holland Pipemaker's founder Joseph Holland married Ann Gee at Manchester Cathedral 8 Nov 1868. John Gee may be a son or nephew of the above Ann Gee.
Ann Gee was born abt Nov 1844 in Manchester.

John Gee appears with Joseph Holland and Ann Gee as son in the 1871 census
1871 census Manchester
17 Blackburn Street
Joseph Holland Head Mar 25 Pipemaker b Manchester
Ann Holland Wife Mar 24 Pipe Finisher b Manchester
John Holland Son 4 b Manchester
Mary Ann Holland Dau 4 months b Mnachester
John's birth will be registered before the marriage of 1867 so may not be the son of Joseph Holland
Most likely BIRTH John Dee DEC QTR MANCHESTER 8 D 236
although there are several other contenders. My Wife is a descendant of the Holland Pipemakers. Daylight

As I cannot attach jpegs in this posting, send me your email via pm I have two clippings from the 1903 and the 1909 slaters directorys - One of them shows a Joseph and a Joseph Junior running 2 companies near each other

This is from a 1927 directory

Joseph, tobacco clay pipe manufacturer (Joseph -- Holland &Sons) ; res. '33 Church la. Harpurhey

Joseph & Sons, tobacco clay pipe manufactrs.  Blackburn st. Rochdale rd -T N City 3,959; TA Cutty Manchester

( TA I suspect means Trading As )

This might be a good site to contact as it mentions Holland

Just for my own interest has anyone found this Blackburn Street on a map?

I knew I would live to regret the day I sold my map collection  :'(
