William Brown Birth 1803
« on: Sunday 12 August 07 22:25 BST (UK) »
Kia ora from New Zealand,

I am trying to find a birth listing for William Brown (Possibly Browne). He was born about 1803: His marriage was on 15th July 1839 in Cannongate, Edinburgh, Midlothian to Isabella Stage, daughter of John Stage. His marriage banns on 12th July 1839 show he was a Lance Sergeant in the First or Royal Regiment of Foot quatered in Edinburgh castle at the time. His age at marriage would make his birthdate around 1803.

Have a geeat day,
Gary

Hi Gary

Scotlands People show 12 baptisms for a William Brown* in Midlothian between 1800 and 1804. One is in 1803:

4 January 1803 to Thomas Brown and Elizabeth Granger, in Edinburgh

If you go to the Scotlands People site www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk (pay to view but very reasonable) you can view all 13 and inspect them for clues. You can then view and download an image of the baptism record

If you have their children's names in birth order, this might help you home in on the most likely person.

However, these records are from the Church of Scotland records, so if his parents were of another faith or didn't have him baptised there might not be a record.

Regards

I notice that he was in the Army.  Have you checked the National Archives Catalogue

http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/search.asp

enter his name and a broad date range (I used 1815 to 1850) and WO in the Series code.

This brings up about 175, some of whom might be in the Regiment you mentioned.

Are you sure he was born in Edinburgh - from census information, death certs, etc.?
