Headstones were not erected by request but as standard procedure. As to what might appear on the headstone of someone shot at dawn rather depends on the viewpoint of the next of kin. I'm sure many will have felt that the soldier concerned was a victim of the circumstances he found himself in. Some who were shot were, of course, guilty of very serious criminal offences.
