Birth Certificates
« on: Friday 10 August 07 21:44 BST (UK) »
Hi everyone,

I wonder if someone can help me.  I am trying to research my grandmothers side and as far as I'm aware she was from Blantyre and then moved to London where she met my grandfather.  Her name was Ann/Annie Stewart and as I don't have her birth certificate it's quite difficult for me to search further but I'm having difficulty in find the Scottish BMD register.  As I'm in Essex, England I can't visit any of the archives in Scotland so I'm wondering if someone can point me in the right direction.

Also, I remember hearing something a while ago that you could view Scottish birth certs online.  Is this true?  If it is, could someone tell me the website I need to go to.  I understand there's probably a fee.

Many thanks,
Kelly x

Hi Kelly,

Is it Scotland's People you're thinking about?

http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk

It's a pay per view site but providing you don't get carried away, you can't beat it.

The home page has all the records available online so you can have a wee look to see what's there.

Have fun!   :)

Anne

Hi Anne,

Thanks for that.  It possibly is that site but I thought the birth register only went up to 1906.  My grandmother was born in 1923/24.  Can I still get it on there?  Can you view the certs online as well?

Thanks,
Kelly x

Yes the birth records on SP go up to 1906

Do you have her marriage and/or death records. From these you have the names of her parents and can find these on SP

Hi,

Yes, I have her death cert but unfortunately it doesn't have her parents name on it.  I thnk I'm going to have to phone for a copy.

Is the BMD register on SP the only one that exists online?  Is there not a completed version like the one for England & Wales?

Many thanks,
Kelly x

As Gadget says - post 1906 you have to go in person or phone/write. Apparently they are looking at putting the later indexes online, but they are not yet available. There is information in the user group minutes about the modern indexes

Hi Kelly
Do you wish to acquire the birth certificate or would you be happy with the details on the certificate.  I might be able to help you with the details on the certificate.
Regards
Tom
