Wilson/(Mac)Taggart, Kells
« on: Thursday 09 August 07 22:50 BST (UK) »
Hi

One of my brickwalls - James Wilson and Jean MacTaggart

I'm trying to get further back with this set of Grt x3 Grandparents. They had the folowing children bpt, Kells- Auchie or Achie a small farm just outside of New Galloway  on the Minnigaff road  :

1798 John (presume died)
1800 Robert
1803 James
1806 John

Above from SP records

No MIs for them

I found a reference to them in the Kirk Session Minutes for Kells when they were admonished for some minor misdemeanor in the 1790s. Other than this info, I can find nothing definite.

Any ideas or info please.

Thanks

Update:

I have found a possible for Jean, bpt. in 1763. Is this a wee bit old? However, her last known child was in 1806, so it's possible  :-\

Her father is down as John MacTaggart, weaver in ? Hinclockhead, Kells.

Does anyone know of this seetlement/farmstead/place, please?

Have managed to go one step further back. James Wilson was born on 11 October 1765 at Garrary, home of John Wilson and McMorine Tait.

Discovered 2 entries for Jean McTaggart in the court records of Kells parish. This was possibly for an irregular marriage which was not recorded in the parish register and possibly for the birth of an illegitimate child.

Little bit of background to Kells churchyard and MI's.  This church was only built in 1812 and although a lot of the stones pre-date the churchyard they were brought from the old church before it was demolished.  The new manse was built on the land they had purchased but had no money left to build the church until 1812.  The old church and the graveyard was situated on the road to Achie and Airie farms accessed at the side of West Riskpark.  There may have been more Memorial stones which were not transported to the new churchyard.  There is no sign of any gravestones as you wouldn't know it had been the site of a church and graveyard as it is now just a field.

Hi Gadget,
I am a Wilson and related.  New to this chat thing and researching this part of my family too. My Ancestry tree is large now and am just making sure I have all the details correct in it. https://www.ancestry.ca/family-tree/tree/119547390/family?cfpid=340187342955
