Newland House - 1881 & now

Samuel Waltham, listed as Walthan, is shown on the 1881 Census as a footman domestic at Newland House - a long way from his home in Lincolnshire. Grateful to know where I can find info about Newland House then & now. Does it still exist, if so what is it used as?

A long shot - does anyone have family in their tree that were there in 1881

Hi Sal, in the Gloucestershire entry on www.genuki.org.uk  there is a listing for Newland House taken from Morris & Co`s Directory of Gloucestershire.  In 1876 a Charles Thomas Palmer Esq. J.P. lived there.

Charles Thomas Palmer J.P. was still at Newland House in 1902 according to the Kelly`s Directory of 1902.

By 1923 Sir Frederick Archdale Palmer bart. was living there.  Hopefully someone who lives nearer to Newland will be able to help you with more recent info

Using Old maps it is possible to identify it's location (assuming you mean Newland House, Newland, Nr Coleford.

It is shown in the centre of the village at the SW corner of the churchyard. on the 1891 map.
It also appears in the 1953 map which also features in Old Maps.

However on Get-a-Map http://www.ordnancesurvey.co.uk/oswebsite/getamap/

and zooming in to the best scale it seems that there is no large building on the site any longer.

It's a rather wordy page on Newland village, but there are several mentions of Newland House and a pencil sketch of the house itself.

Reading the Victoria History, from the above posting, it appears that it became the Ostrich Inn.

of course the Inn name may have been transfered to another building later.

Thanks to both of you for your interest. I am particularly grateful for the reference - I had info from a similar source up to the late 1800s but not as recently as 1992

I have read the website for the Ostrich & can see the family connection but cannot see how the inn can be Newland House
