Hi Joe,

Thanks for your continued vigilance.  I have just opened up after completing the hoovering up - I hate it!  But it is one of my chores and I just have to get on with it.
Well, Joe - you've opened up another can of worms, but it is interesting and it looks like you are correct.
After digesting the information received on Saturday, I had thought that Elizabeth may have been born out of wedlock but it looks like you have solved the problem.
You asked about the 1861 marriage cert: John Someville married Isabella Douglas on 31st Dec 1861 and the residence given in the register is; 49 Greenvale Street, Glasgow (this may have been misinterpreted when entered and was actually No. 44 Greenvale Street).  John's father and mother were George Someville and Margaret Somerville nee Heally.  Isabella's father and mother were Agnes (poor writing here but it looks like Agnes)  Douglas and George Douglas.

The mysteries now are:  What happened to wee Agnes Somerville born 26/03/1868.  She was born before the 1861 census but does not appear on the 1871 census.  Did she die before the age of 5?  This I am trying to find out and will probably go for a death certificate search and a download.

The other mystery is; I always remember my mother telling me that my gradfather Joseph Somerville was killed at the Ibrox Park disaster - there were 2.  Since he was married to Caroline, his second wife in 1926, it was obviously not the 1st Ibrox disaster, which happended in 1901 and it could not have been the 2nd, since it occurred in 1971.  So! I managed to locate and downloaded his death details.  Joseph died on 4th January 1939 at the Victoria Infirmary, Cathcart, Glasgow from a falling injury where he sustained a fracture to the 6th and 7th Cervical Vertebrae - this sounds like a crushing to me!  So, I then searched the net for info on football incidents around the date of his death to find that the traditional new years football game with Rangers and Celtic was held on 2nd January 1939 at Ibrox Park, 2 days before his death.  I now think that it was not a disaster but that he may have been killed in a crowd crush.  I have therefore emailed a site maintained by the University of Glasgow which holds records of all kinds of medical situations etc., from the Victoria hospital and other Scottish medical institutions.  Fingers crossed that they reply and solve this one.

Thanks again Joe,
Kind Regards,
John

Hi John & Joekar,

It was a typo by Joekar, on a earlier post he typed a 8 instead of a 6. So correct DOB is 26th March 1866.

That clears up that.

Hi John and all,

I have searced for a death of Agnes Somerville on SP, between dates of 1866 and 1871, and ages 0 to 5, and get 5 returned. When I put in County- Lanarkshire that goes down to 4, when I put in district - Bridgeton returns 1, I would search the 5 and confirm the Bridgeton death there first before downloading.

Hi John,

Re Joseph Somerville and injuries received in 2nd January 1939 - go to Scotsman Archives

http://www.rootschat.com/links/01tg/ and you will see a heading

"Crushing at Ibrox"  The Scotsman - 3rd January 1939 Page: 10 Word Count: 1,426

Could well be worth taking a short subscription. Or can some kind soul help us out.

Hi Again Tom,

I have downloaded the article in the Scotsman and it does name my grandfather as one of the injured.  It states that he was taken to hospital with probable concussion and that later that night he was reported as being very ill.  In fact he died 2 days after the incident.  At least there is no more mystery.  I'll bet my mother (now deceased) thinks all her secrets had died with her - unbelievable!

I also downloaded Agnes Somerville's death certificate.  The poor wee thing was 4 months old when she died of pneumonia.

Sad as it is these unfortunate things happened back then, but it is all good information to pass on to my children and grandchildren.

Kind Regards,

John
