Nice to finally meet you also ,

My cousin got the birth cert for my grandad james , the 1 you found for us , and on it said his father was john lowrie a steamcrane driver , widower and he as been giving me more of an headache than james did .  :-\.

I got john lowrie (james's parents ) marriage cert and it did all tie in with hannah jones as his second wife . But as i said i cannot get back any further than that , i can find info but dont know how to tie it all together so i can send for john's birth cert . Hence this plea for help .

Hi Sue,

Just updating this after pm's.
We are now looking for the baptism c.1851 and first marriage 1881-1889 of John Lowrie/Laurie, occupation engine man born either Newcastle or Scotland, (from 1891/1901 census info) with a father John, occupation Carter (from 2nd marriage cert).

The 1851 census Newcastle looks very likely for the parents:
HO107/2406 fol.415 p.29  St. Nicholas Newcastle
John Lawrie head m 25 Carter Jedburgh Scotland
Ann     "       wife   m 24            Warkworth, Northumberland
Thomas "   brother m 28 Miller   Jedburgh Scotland

Will try to find them in later census

There's a marriage June Qu 1849 Newcastle 25/383 for John Lawrie with Ann Luke on the same page - possible??

FreeBMD has the following birth:
John LOWREY born in the September quarter 1850 in Newcastle upon Tyne.

And the IGI has the following baptism:
John LOWREY, parents John LOWREY & Anne, bap Saint Nicholas, Newcastle upon Tyne, 5 Nov 1850

But if this is the right chap, where is he in the 1851 census!!

The IGI has the following extracted entries for the same place (St Nicholas, Newcastle) and same parents, John LOWREY & Ann(e):
Ann LOWREY bap 25 May 1846
Mary LOWREY bap 11 Jun 1848
John LOWREY bap 5 Nov 1850
Ann LOWRY bap 1 Mar 1852
{Elizabeth LOWREY bap 20 May 1857
{Ann LOWREY bap 20 May 1857

There's also the following LDS submission:
Ann LOWRIE or LOWRY, b 1852, Newcastle, parents John LOWRIE or LOWRY and Ann LUKE; d 1920.

All very confusing.

If the family which Barbara found in 1851 could be found on the 1861 and 1871 censuses, this might sort things out?

If it's any help form Newcastle City Council's searchable index, this is definately a couple and they married at All Saints Church.

Looked for John Lowrie and Ann on later census returns without success but may have found the reason on Ancestry.  There is a Oneworld tree that appears to place them in Victoria Australia by 1858 - Ann died there in 1873 and John in 1914 according to the tree.

IF this is the same family - their son John (b.1854?) also died in Australia  :o

Many thanks you two for coming in on this one, it's been a real head-scratcher, Sue & I going round in circles

That's good to know Ann Luke is a definite, perhaps Sue can get that certificate, and if they went to Australia that would sort that, but the death of their son John there throws a bit of a spanner in the works....

So it's looking as though this isn't the right family   :'(

It's very hard when (the right) John's birthplace was given as Glasgow, Scotland in 1901 and as Newcastle, Northumberland in 1891.  And possibly as an unknown place in Durham in 1881 (if that's the same John as in 1891 and 1901).

JAP
PS: Just for completeness/interest.

Ann LOWRIE, b NORT, died aged 47 in 1873 in Victoria, parents James LUKE & Ann NICHOL.  Right age for that Ann of the 1851 census.

There's the marriage of a James LUKE and Ann NICHOL in the IGI, 1820, Howick, Northumberland.

In Victoria, John LOWRIE, parents John LOWRIE & Ann LUKE, died aged 74 in 1928 (i.e. b ca 1854) in Pine Grove.

In Victoria, John LOWRIE & Ann LUKE had:
*Christina b Hamilton, 1859
*James Luke b Hamilton, 1861 (died age 15 in 1877)
*Andrew b Byam, 1863
*Edward b Bran, 1865 (died age 84 in Echuca in 1949)
*Walt b Branchholm, 1867 (died as Walter aged 71 in 1939 in Echuca; father's name given as John Scott Lowrie)
*Helen b Branxholme, 1869 (died as Ellen ZEALLEY aged 56 in 1926 in Eca)
*Thomas b Bran, 1871 (died aged 3 weeks)

Unfortunately I don't have access to censuses (other than the 1881 on FamilySearch) but it looks as though the 1871 and 1861 censuses (both England and Scotland ???) are going to have to be given a good going over.

Looking for a John LOWREY (spelled and/or mistranscribed any which way) born ca 1851 (that seems to be the only constant!) and born who knows where ...

I guess in 1861, as he's would have been aged only about 10, he should be with his father John (that is, assuming that he was telling the truth about his father and assuming that the father was still alive in 1861).

What a needle in a haystack!
