« on: Friday 03 August 07 13:35 BST (UK) »
Hi,I would be very grateful if anyone could look up a Ballinasloe birth for me,the name is Martin Salmon and he was born as far as i know in 1848 in Ballinasloe, parish of Creagh & Kilclooney. Any information on Martin or any Salmon families from Ballinasloe past or present would be greatly appreciated, Ger

Civil registration of births in Ireland did not begin until 1864. For a baptismal record you need to find the correct church and see if the records still exist for the period you want to search.
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

This is on www.leitrim-roscommon.com site. It has 1901 census transcriptions from Kilcloony(note spelling) parish. Great site! Though not the Martin you`re looking for, there must be some connection as Salmon is an unusual enough name and Kilcloony is a small place.

There are some Galway Salmons on the IGI of www.familysearch.org, one of whom-Bridget -was born in Ballinasloe in 1866 though, of course the other Galway entries on the IGI may also have been born in Ballinasloe.

St Michael`s Church Ballinasloe has the records for  Kilcloony parish. Might be worth contacting the parish secretary to look up Martin for you.

Have ancestral connections myself in Kilcloony, Ballinasloe though none -to my knowledge-with Salmons. Will pm you if I find out anything more through my researches.

Hi ,
Thanks a million to you both for your replies to my post, i am very grateful for your help,i am convinced there is a connection with my Salmons and the Ballinasloe Salmons that live there today because as you have stated Limgal it is "an unusual name in a small town ".I think my next job will be to contact someone in St.Michaels parish church or else wait till the Irish Family History Foundation post the Records For East Galway on-line .http://www.irish-roots.net/pay-per-view.asp.Thanks again for your help,Ger
