QUARMAN

I'm looking for a whole family who seem to have disappeared around 1862 and resurface in 1881.

I'm going to give some background info to make it a bit easier:

The family were last seen at Bethnal Green Workhouse in May 1861.  They also had a stay there in 1860.  The family were admitted under the following names in 1860:

Sarah Quarman age 42
Thomas Quarman age 16
Elizabeth Quarman age 11
Ellen Quarman age 6 (illegitimate)
John Quarman age 4 (illegitimate)
Eliza Quarman age 16 months (illegitimate)

The widow Quarman had actually remarried 1851 to a bloke named Benjamin Norris.  We think that the marriage was not a good one and that Sarah reverted to her previous married name.  (Note the illegitimate children were all given her dead husbands name even though he died in 1849)

Address given to workhouse that family was last living at was Hepworth place, Virginia Row.

The youngest child Eliza, was born at Old Castle Street in 1858

While in the workhouse on the 15th July 1861 - Sarah Quarman gives birth to Alice Quarman - father unknown.  Alice Quarman dies on 15th of August 1862 at Mead Street, Bethnal Green

The oldest son Thomas is in the military during the 1871 census - but what happened to the rest of the family??????

THere are a group of us who have long been trying to figure this one out, so any help would be great!  I've checked the 1871 myself but have not been able to find them.  It would help if i was able to search for the youngest 3 children by first name all together, but i cannot!

Thankyou

Hello Vikki

I have been looking for Sarah and the kids in the workhouse in 1861,but can't even find them there  ::) Can you give us the correct reference please,so we can get some starting point with this family. Is the surname mistranscribed?

The kids will all have been born as Quarman, cos that was mum's legal surname at the time, regardless of who their dad really was.

All the best

Carol

Thanks both for your replies :)

Apparently certain pages for Bethnal Green Workhouse for the 1861 are missing - so won't be able to find them on the 1861.

The marriage for George Reynolds and Elizabeth Quarman is correct - sorry I should have mentioned that she was out on her own for the 1871.  The son William had joined the military (as well as his brother Thomas) I have their military records - so neither of them are on the 1871.  The William who died in 1849 was Sarahs first husband.

So it SHOULD be Sarah Quarman with 3 children, Ellen, John and Eliza.  Can't find them anywhere!!!

Again, thanks for your help!
