Hanningtons in Durham
« on: Thursday 02 August 07 17:58 BST (UK) »
Hi guys

I have Joseph Grant who married Ann Hannington in Newburn Northumberland on 19 Feb1808. The birth entry of their oldest son in the Parish records states: Joseph Grant born 14 March 1809 Lemmington, christened 7 May 1809 1st son of James Grant, Glassmaker, Native of Earsdon by his wife Ann Hannington native of Stoken Oxfordshire.

This doesn’t show however where Ann lived when she and Joseph Grant married.

Then I found on the 1841 Census in Derwenthaugh Winlaton George Hannington, fire brick maker 50 years old and not born in Durham. George has a son, John, aged 21 who a house agent.
I also came across this document 4 September 1847
(1) Sir Thomas John Clavering of Axwell Park and Greencroft, Baronet
(2) George Hannington of Derwenthaugh, brickmaker; Joseph Hannington of Derwenthaugh, agent; and James Grant of Lemington, Newburn, Northumberland, glass cutter
Lease by (1) to (2) of a fireclay and brickyard at Swalwell and coals under 66a.0r.24p of land called Morris Field, Armstrong's Closes,Wigham's Close, Swalwell Close, East Close, West Close, Middle Close and Low Pasture as shown by plan endorsed on second membrane, for a term of 21 years from 23 November 1846

Would it be wrong to assume that James Grant went into business with his brother in law and nephew?

I don’t know where George married, only that his wife is called Mary. But John appears to have been their oldest, so I guess the marriage was sometime around 1819.

Have any of you come across their marriage, or the birth of John? I am just hoping the there will be another neat entry, which shows where George was born.

I am also wondering if these Hanningtons were the founders of Hannington & Co Ltd of Swalwell.

I have been unable to find any Hanningtons in the Northumberland/Durham area before these guys turned up. And virtually every Hannington I do find later is a fire brick maker. So my theory is that they moved from Oxfordshire to this area and I'm trying to find some proof.

(I also want to find the Hannington family fortune and quit my depressing job  ;D ;D - but I'll settle for just some more background info for them)

Any good advice, suggestions or comment much appreciated.

Greenvalley Golddigger,

I hope these snippets lead you to a fortune and gets you out of that Estate Agent's office... but I doubt it !
-------------------------------------------------------------

Joseph Grant marries Ann Hannington in Newburn
( I assume at the Parish church) 19 Feb 1808.

Joseph was a native of Earsdon, (the village or within the Parish) in Northumberland.  Ann was a native of Stoken, Oxfordshire. Surely the assumption is at least one of them, maybe both of them , were living somewhere within the bounds of Newburn Parish, when they married. My Glorious Goodwood betting money is on Lemmington !
-------------------------------------------------------------

I will avoid your assumption about business partnership.

------------------------------------------------------------------------
No early Hanningtons in Northumberland !

There was a William Hannington born in Northumberland in 1791... brickmaker ( Census 1841 , 820/1 37-14 @ Byker)

---------------------------------------------------------------------

Census 1841 has 228 Hanningtons in all England... only 14 in Oxfordshire. 51 in Middlesex, 41 in Berkshire, 17 in Surrey.

The "surname profiler" site has Reading and Berkshire as the main root place of Hanningtons.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Where was John Hannington born ?. Many first-borns were born where parents married.

Michael,

If Ann Hannington married James Grant in 1808 then she too was born about 1785 - my money is still on the theory that the Hanningtons from Oxford moved to Northumberland/Durhem and started their brick making businesses. I also think this William is a brother or something.

My feeling is that James marrying a Hannington, go into business with 2 Hanningtons, without there being any ties is possible but improbable

And Swalwell, although in Durham, is only 4 miles from Lemington.

My main problem is that I can't find the birth of the Hanningtons anywhere. Looks like they arrived perfectly formed and as adults or babies out of nowhere. :-[

I don't work for an estate agent but you're right - there isn't a fortune I can put my hands on. Mind you, dreaming is quite nice as well and a great method of escaping the dull drudgery of every day life. ::)

Am new to this site so please forgive any mistakes.
I'm trying to find out information about George Hannington b abt 1790 in Dorset (according to the census) he married a Mary Armstrong and founded Hannington Brick works in Swallwell. I know others were looking for this family a while back and wondered if they found any information. Can't find anything on either George or Marys parents.

Hi Debbie,

welcome to Rootschat.

I really wish I could give you some more information on the Hannington ancestors, but I have been unable to get any further with them. I have no real doubts that Ann Hannington is related to George and William Hannington and I have looked at all the Census information on them, but found no further clue as to where they came from.

Whichever place they name, if you check in that location you can't get a birth, well at least I can't.

If George is your ancestor, then you're a something cousin to my husband, as Ann Hannington was his great great grandmother.

I did come across a William Hannington b abt 1789 in Middlesex according to the 1851 census. Said to be a contractor of brick he was living in Newcastle with his wife Mary b 1784 also from Middlesex. Also living with them was a Joseph Hannington (again a contractor of brick, his wife Elizabeth and son William) a Mary Ann Hannington (married to ? and her son Richard) and also an Edward Errington (a tailor , wife Mary and daughter Mary Jane) and a Thomas Smart a fitter turner and wife Jane.
All apart from William and Mary were born in Northumberland mainly round Newcastle. The 1841 census calls William a brick manufacturer
It's got to be the same family but I can't work out the link, sorry to have been so long winded.

Hi Debbie,

this is the 1841 census info I found:

1841 census   Derwenthaugh      born in Durham
George Hannington fire brick maker    50      n
Mary      wife              52      n
Joseph      agent                  21      y
William                                 19      n
Henry                                 17      y
Jane                                   15      y

1841 census Lamesley          born in Durham
John Hannington     quarryman    55      n
Margaret            50      n
Jns              quarryman   20      n
Joseph              quarryman   20      y
Henry              quarryman           15      y
Hannah            13      y
Margaret            11      y
John            4      y

1841 census Newcastle Byker      born in Northumberland
William Hannington  brickmaker   50      y
Mary            45      y
Margaret            20      y
William            20      y
Jane            14      y
Joseph            14      y
Mary            15      y

There is also this information on IGI:

William & Martha Hanington, Batch number: P018471
Children:
William Hannington christened Oct 1785 St Mary Reading Berkshire
John Hanington christened 21/10/1787 St Mary Reading Berkshire
Anne Hanington christened 03/10/1790 St Mary Reading Berkshire
Elizabeth Hanington christened 29/12/1794 St Mary Reading Berkshire

As I said before, I think all these Hannington's are related and came up north, but I don't have any further proof. Reading is quite close to Stoke North, so birth location doesn't need to be a problem.

Unfortunately I have been unable to get back any further, or find out more about the Hanningtons. Hope this will help you
