birstall, batley
« on: Thursday 02 August 07 07:06 BST (UK) »
I googled Birstall today and was suprised to see some modern address's listed as Birstall, Batley.
being completely unfamiliar with Yorkshire, is Birstall a section of Batley? if so, I now understand how the couple I'm researching got together, as he was of Birstall, she was of Armley and her mother was of Batley

thanks for any clarification.

no, but I appreciate the thought. I'm more of a visual person, so I went back to my xerox of an old British map and found Armley and Birstall appear to be 7 miles apart, but am having difficulry finding Batley, Hightown or Littletown...they elude me yet.
it appears that there is a parish church for each town? then my people must have mt at market or some such....I was hoping they'd met at church so I wouldn't have to search so hard for them.

thank you, Jane.
as an American who's been lax in learning the various boundaries such as registration districts in England, can you explain what the aproximate size of a registration district is and what it tends to cover?
I am researching in this section of Yorks two branches, on of which was of Batley and Armley, the other of which was of Hightown and Birstall. it appears they each moved from the former to the latter town before removing to America. there is still much I don't know about Yorkshire.

HI Neko

this link shows you the towns/villages that are covered now by Dewsbury Reg Office.

It shows when those certain places moved to be covered by Dewsbury.

If you want a more visual approach to where places are why not visit

www.alangodfreymaps.co.uk

And see if they still have teh Old Ordanance maps available.

I have one in front of me that covers the year of 1905/07 and the area then known as Liversedge and North Heckmondwike.

Hi Neko,

Littletown is in the valley, between Heckmondwike and Cleckheaton and Hightown is about a mile up the hill from Cleckheaton.  Birstall is about two miles from Batley . Littletown and Hightown would be about 4 to 5 miles from Batley. hope this helps.

that's wonderful, Joan! thank you! I'm starting to get a feel for the place. I'm in a valley that's about 12 miles across at it's widest populated point and about 50 miles long. I can sort of visualize where the towns might be from our down-town (which is truly down town! it's in the lowest part of the valley. good thing the river doesn't tend to flood! lol...
from the map it appears that Armley is a good 7 miles from all the other towns. wonder if they were moving around. I've yet to find out exactly what their occupation was.
