Pilling ecclesall bierlow 1901 and before
« on: Monday 30 July 07 18:32 BST (UK) »
Hi to all,
i am trying to find the parents/siblings of James L? Pilling born abt 1884 ecclesall Bierlow, he was the father to my grandfather whom i never knew but i do have my grandfathers marriage certificate, his name was Thomas Edward pilling born 1904 ecclesall Bierlow and married Elsie Marsh born 1904 Ecclesall Bierlow they married on 5th June at St chad's church norton/woodseats Thomas's address at time of marriage was 24 Olivet Road and his father's name is given as James L? Pilling and he is deceased at the time of marriage, i put a question mark after L as James does have a middle name but i can't quite make it out it looks like Lindley? at a guess.
any help/advice on this would be great as i have got quite a way back with Elsie Marsh side, but need to find James Pilling somewhere to get me going.
Thanks

Hi n°1Gal,

I can only see a Joseph Lindley Pilling on BMD  ???, birth registered March 1881 Ashton under Lyne, Marriage March 1901 Sheffield. Could it possible say Joseph instead of James?  ???

Hi Tati,

I have the marriage cert in front of me now, and i am certain it says James as the father of the brides name is Joseph and it looks nothing like that? but the date and place are on th right line?
I wonder if i could find his death anywhere as he is down as deceased at time of wedding and occupation as a carter, would Thomas's birth certificate tell me anything different do you think?

Yes, Thomas' birth cert would be very useful! It would confirm father's name and give his mother's name.

I'm stuck for now. Can't Joseph Pilling on any census, nor can I find a James Pilling living or born in Ecclesall either  :-\

Are you sure James was born in Sheffield?  I have only one family of Pillings in Ecclesall Bierlow and there is no James in 1891.  I did find a James T Pilling born in Jun 1886 in Leeds.  The nearest I can get in Sheffield is a James Paling born in 1880.

Actually on Yorkshire BMD it gives the year as 1885 James Tyrer Pilling.

I did another search in Sheffield.  There is a Joseph S Pilling in 1919 trade directory just listed householder address 41 Buttermere Street  The only one near Norton Woodseats is a Charles C Pilling who is a manufacturing silversmith and he is at Beauchief which is not far from Norton Woodseats.  Do you know his fathers occupation?

Hi.

Is the marriage certificate the original from Sheffield Register Office or is it a copy from the GRO. The vicar of the parish submitted a copy to the GRO written in his own hand.

I checked one out last week at St Silas as the GRO copy stated the marriage took place on the 31st April as we all know April only has 30 days...the original deposited at the archives quite clearly gives a date of the 21st of April.

There only appears to be one family who would fit the bill in Sheffield in 1891 and the father (Thomas is dead) I got this name from the previous census. He came from Duckenfield in Cheshire .

Hi to all,
Thank you to everyone for there searches, it looks like i will have to get 'Thomas Edward Pillings' birth cert, the marriage cert i have for him and Elsie Marsh married 4th june 1927 at St Chads in sheffield is a copy from the GRO, his fathers name is down as ' James L ? Pilling and is occupation  is ' Carter' but he is also deceased at this time, ironically Elsie's family do come from Leeds, so it could be a possibility that the family's are both from Leeds and moved to sheffield via marriages.
