Thanks for the suggestion, but the person I am interested in definitely died in 1865, and I have already searched for a will/probate record for him, without success.
There is a probate entry on Ancestry for a Robert Liddell, a farmer of Nesbit, Northumberland, who died in Sept 1867, but he is one of quite a number of Robert Liddells/Liddles that I know about, and is not my ancestor.
