Heckmondwike Cemetery
« on: Sunday 29 July 07 17:57 BST (UK) »
Hi All

I have just found out that my GGGG grandfather is buried in a "freehold vault" at Heckmondwike Cemetery.

Firstly, does anyone know what a "freehold vault" is??

Secondly, does anyone know how I can find out the position of the vault. I have a plot number but haven't a clue where to start looking. I know that all graves are marked with a number even if they don't have a headstone but this dates back to 1861 and I already know that that part of the cemetery is fairly neglected and overgrown.

Can I get a plan of the cemetery??

Any help appreciated.
Many Thanks
Helen

Hi Helen,

We have a map of Heckmondwike Cemetery if you still need it. It is very overgrown ,and a lot of the stones have now gone, but if you let us have the plot number we will have a look next time we are over there (possibly this weekend).

Best Wishes

Hi Roy and Gail

Many thanks but I have now located the plot. No headstone unfortunately.

Thanks again
Helen

Hi Helen,

Glad you have found the plot. One other bit of information that may be of use to you is from the Memorial Inscriptions of Westgate Congregational Church Heckmondike, which reads

Side 1. In memory of JOHN PORRITT, who died 11.12.1872, aged 59./  Also MARIA, wife of the above, who died 21.3.1895, aged 80 years./ “He giveth his beloved sleep. “
Side 2. Also MARTHA, their daughter, who died 22 9.1858, aged 17 years./ Also AMELIA, their daughter, who died 1.1.1872, aged 19 years.
Side 3. Also BENJAMIN, JANE and SARAH JANE, who died in infancy.

(Monument with cross in l.ss)

Best Wishes
