Whitchurch burial Cardiff- John PENROSE
« on: Sunday 29 July 07 15:07 BST (UK) »
Hello.
My great grandfather John Penrose died and was buried in Cardiff, Wales in the March quarter of 1902 aged 77. He is buried in Cardiff - I think in Whitchurch.  ???
I live in Australia, and I am having great difficulty tracing the correct John Penrose. He was born in Cornwall and married to Philippa Polglase who was also born in Cornwall. They first appear together in 1881 census in Swansea with 2 sons, then in Cardiff in 1891 with 4 sons. Again in 1901 with 2 sons still at home.
Philippa is also buried in Whitchurch, Cardiff - 13 Feb 1924, I believe.
Would the church records show any details of birth dates, parents etc?  ??? If I purchase the death certificates, will they show any of these details? I have spent 10 years tracing probably the wrong John Penrose, and need to start again.  :'( (See Cornwall Rootschat topic - Marriage John PENROSE - Philippa POLGLASE)
If anyone can help me by looking at church burial records, or advising what information is shown on a Welsh death certificate, I would be most grateful.   :)
I am also looking for their marriage. They were not young when they had their first child, so there are a lot of years, and a lot of miles from Cornwall to Wales, to track.  :P
Thank you for any help.  ;D

The details on a death certificate issued in Wales are the same as the ones issued in England - no parents in other words.

Burials records might be at the record office, certainly the records for Cathays cemetery which isn't very far from Whitchurch and it also holds the parish records for Whitchurch and burial records for Whitchurch St Mary 1930 -1943.
 http://www.glamro.gov.uk/

Glamorgan Family History Society has transcribed the memorial inscriptions for Whitchurch St Mary and can be bought from the Parish Chest
http://www.parishchest.com/
but no point in buying unless you're sure that they are there

The move from Cornwall to Glamorgan would probably have been by sea - there were  established trade links with Cornwall especially to the copper and tin industries in Swansea. So the marriage is probably in Cornwall or Glam.

Hi Brissygal,

Have been watching your Cornwall thread also.

I  contacted Cathys cemetery and was lucky enough to find both my ggrandparents buried in the same grave. ...1902..1924

This lead me to be given the correct full name of my ggrandmother...I had been searching for her second name given on the census. The informant of her death was her brother, leading me to another generation...hope you get that lucky too.

Although this might not work for you as it was second marriage, have you tried following the naming pattern of the children.?
I noticed all the children had two names on birth registration;

Charles Edwin, Frederick George, Joseph Henry, Richard Thomas, some of these names might link you to the fathers/brothers of John and Phillipa.

I spotted my ggrandparents this way, maybe you will ;)

HELLO
Just looked up Monumental inscriptions of Parish Church of St Mary Whitchurch Cardiff
I found no Penrose buried in either old grave yard or new grave yard.
Yor Penrose would have been buried in New grave yard because of the year just don't see  that surname.
Hope this helps a little :(
cheers cardiff

Hi Brissygal,

Bit of extra information incase it will help you one day.

CD of Cardiff Western Mail 1907 Directory of names lists:

Joseph Henry Penrose living at 2 Orbit Street, Roath, Cardiff.

Mrs Penrose living at 24 Moira Street, Roath, Cardiff....think that's the address you quoted for the 1901 census.

If I'm following the correct Philippa Polglase, she was with her married sister Elizabeth Roberts in Lancashire in 1871.  ???  First child Charles Edwin was born in June Qtr 1877 in Swansea.
Thanks everyone for your helpful posts.  :)

Hi halfasheep,

I am so sorry but I can't remember where I bought it but it was on-line. I was suprised to see it was mailed from a foreign Country though....maybe you could find the link via search engine.

If you want any information from it,  PM me, and I will have a look for you. :)
