St George in the East
« on: Sunday 29 July 07 12:00 BST (UK) »
Does anyone know if memorial inscriptions exist for the cemetery around the church? Is ther a site plan for burials? My ancestor George Thomas Weakner and Margaret his wife are recorded as being buried in the 3rd grave from the chuch. I have visited the church but this description doesn't really help
Many thanks
Michael

I visited the church about 2 years ago and during a walk round the very large churchyard I saw that many- if not most- if not all headstones etc had been lifted and placed round the perimeter of the churchyard

In 1886 the churchyard was landscaped into public gardens which is probably when the headstones were placed around the perimeter.

In 1941 the church was badly damaged by incendiery bombs and was rebuilt in 1960

Someone at the church(if there is anyone) may be able to help you with the graves
