The mystery deepens.
We have the two 1861 census entries for a Catharine Rush, one with a dau, Louisa, whose father is stated to be Alfred. As both the 2 Catharine's are widows we need a death for an Alfred Rush , 1857 (birthof Louisa) to Apr. 1861.
I searched the complete BMDs for all with the surname Rush for a death for Alfred, looking at the district for Rutland vol 7a. ( adjoing districts, Billsdon,Kettering,Market Harbourer,Oakham,Oundle & Stamford). The only one for Alfred was>>
Sept. ¼ 1858 Mile End 1c 348
I have my doublts that this is the correct one, as there was a marriage for an Alfred Rush in Shorditch.
I also searched the complete BMDs for a marriage for a Catharine Stretton, 1854 -1857 ( oneof her birth dates for the 1861 census put her birth c 1837). I found this one, thinkng, hooray, found it, right name, right distict, right date.
Marriage
Catharine Stretton
Mar ¼ 1857 Oakham 7a 327
BUT, on checking this in the freeBMDs found that the choice of spouse's named was, George Green & William Abbott. No Alfred Rush.
I then checcked the 1861 census for a Catharine Green with a spouse George & found this.
RG9/2307 folio 58 page 8
Market Overton Rutland
George Green age 37 Maltster b Market Overton
Catharine wife age 27 b Rutland Greetham
Thomas son age 3 b Market Overton
Henry Stretton, brother, age 22 b Greetham.
So, I will risk a guess here that this Catharine is perhaps a cousin to the one shown as a dau of Thomas Stretton. It means having a search for the births or bapts of these two Catharines.
There is no birth registered in the complete BMDs or a Catharine Stretton, 1837- 1841.
Just found this, souce IGI
Catharine Stretton
bapt 1834 Greetham, Rutland
father John Stretton mother Mary Tomblin
Ah, well, back to the drawing board, as they say.
