Thanks for that info, Linda. I'll keep looking for the others - hope Joe (and anyone else) can join in the search  :)

I see that Alexandrina married in 1885 in Glasgow and that her parents were alive then. Did they all move to Glasgow?

There's a possible for Jane in 1881 but I'm not sure. The birthplace parish would fit with the 1861:

District 98 ED 18 Page 7

5 Nelson Street, Inverness

Jane McKenzie, hd, 47, sailor's wife, b. Lochbroom parish, Rossshire
Donald Stewart, boarder, 43, pensioner (navy), b. Invernes

There are some possibles for Alexandrina - in Glasgow as a domestic servant but a bit iffy  :-\

 :D

Oh no they didn't. The 1881 was correct for Jane. Here they are in 1871:

4 Nelson Street, Inverness District 98 ED 18 Page 28

Jane McKenzie, hd, 36, sailor's wife, b. Lochbroom
John Mckenzie, 15, sailor abs able seaman), b. Inverness
Alexina McKenzie, 10, scholar, b. Inverness
Catherine McKenzie, 8, scholar, b. Inverness

I presume John,snr, was at sea both 1871 and 1881. I'll have a look.

A more likely one though because he was down as 'seaman, merchant navy' on the marriage cert and I'm sure she would have said ''Master' if he had been:

District 554 (Kilmory, Bute)  Ship -  Villager in Inverness, home port - North Shields

John McKenzie, 45, abs (able seaman), b. Rosshire

Given the naming conventions, on the IGI, the only John McKenzie who fits was baptised Lochbroom, 9th October 1825. Father John McKenzie.  I can't locate a baptism for Jane/Jean M(a)clean in Lochbroom between 1825 to 1837 or Assynt, Sutherland (the neighbouring parish)

Gadget

Added - it will be difficult to trace the families further than about 1790 - Lochbroom parish records only go that far back. Many of my neighbours have had to visit Edinburgh to examine the Sessions minute books
