Photographer in Oldham Street, M/c
« on: Wednesday 25 July 07 10:45 BST (UK) »
A cousin found an old photograph of my great grandfather, it was probably taken the early part of the 20th century.
The Studion was "Van Ralty Limited" and the call themselves "Artists in Portature". The address is 91 Oldham Street. Presumably Manchester, England. I knew Oldham Street and it`s not far from where the family lived.
Does anyone know when the photographer worked at this address?  Can this be found from a directory maybe.
Thanks for any help.
George.

Hi George

In 1927 Van Ralty only have the premises at 92 London Rd.

So the photograph must date before this.

Hope this helps

Regards, Dave

Thanks for that Dave.
That`s narrowed the time down a bit. Don`t suppose you know where on London Road this was. I remember the railway station, the fire station and Mazels, I think London Road probably continued to Ardwick Green one way and probably Piccadilly the other.

Regards.

George.

Hi George,

Looking at a 1900 map and old long gone pub names and trying to equate that to a modern A - Z.
My best guesstimate would be on the opposite side to Piccadilly station, between the Fire Station and Mazels store. The site is now part of the UMIST campus.

London Rd. runs from Piccadilly to the Mancunian Way roundabout, ( near where Mazels was, they were at nos. 122 - 138), then changes to Downing St. on to Ardwick Green.

Hope this helps
Regards, Dave

Thanks for all your help Dave. It sounds like your a Mancunian. My mam is, we lived there for most of the 50s but I was born up in Geordie land like my dad.

Cheers mate.

George.
