New York passenger list and census look up please
« on: Tuesday 24 July 07 14:00 BST (UK) »
Can anyone look at the passenger list from the UK to New York  for a William Hunter Leece born 1899 at Lanchester County Durham. I do not what year he went but I think it was between the wars. I think he could have also enlisted in the US army for WW2. Any other info from the census etc would be great.
Many thanks
I am sorry but my emails are no longer working.

There is a WWII enlistment record for William H. Leece born in 1898.  He was White, not yet a citizen, born in the UK.  He lived in Galveston, Texas and enlisted in Houston, TX on 15 Jul 1942 as a Private.

He had 3 years of high school, was a geologist, and was a widower without dependents.  He was 69 inches tall and 147 pounds.

I found him on a passenger list.

William Hunter Leece sailed on the SS Carmania leaving Liverpool on 1 Jun 1922 and arriving 10 Jun 1922.

Age 23 years, 8 months.  Single.  Occupation - bricklayer.  Can read and write English.  Nationality - English.  Last permanent residence - Lanchester, England.  Father:  Mr. W.S. Leece, "The Nook", Lanchester.  Final destination - Cleveland, Ohio.
Didn't have a ticket to his final destination.  Paid for passage by himself.  I think it says he was in possesion of $260.  He had not been in the US before.  He was going to join a friend, Mr. C.E. Cotter, 3825 West 34th St., Cleveland.  He was coming to the US permanently and intended to become a citizen.  In good health.  Five feet 10 inches tall, medium complexion, brown hair, blue eyes.  Born in Lanchester, England.

There is a 1930 Census entry in Cleveland that might be him.

William P. Lees, head of household, renting home for $40, owns a radio set, white male, 35 years old, married, 32 years old at first marriage, able to read and write, born in England, parents born in England, immigrated in 1922, alien, manager of grocery store, not a veteran.

Wife is Nellie P., 33 years old, married at age 30, born in England, parents born in England, immigrated in 1926, alien, no occupation.

There is also a William Leece on the Social Security Death Index.  Born 14 Sep 1898, died April 1977.  Last residence and benefit at Texas City, Galveston, Texas, 77590.  SSN issued in Texas before 1951.

He is also in the Texas death index.  He died in Galveston County on 27 Apr 1977.
