Can you help please !!!!
« on: Tuesday 24 July 07 00:57 BST (UK) »
Hello from Oz... I am looking for two families which I have established in the 1901  Lancashire UK Census.. The Surnames are Fraser/Frazer and Gravel. These are my hubby's Grandparents who left England about 1913-1914 to come to Australia.

Hugh  Fraser & his wife Ernestine ( Nee Neumann ) lived in 54 Crabtree Lane Prestwich together with Ernestine's mother Annie Neumann and ( brother In-law of Hugh's )  Richard Neumann.. Hugh was an Electrical Store Keeper & Richard was an Apprentice..

Robert Gravel and his wife Annie ( nee Micklethwaite ) lived in 13 Walsden ? Street Prestwich  ( It's a bit hard to read )... Robert Gravel was a Stone Mason...

I am sure that both families knew one another in England before coming to Australia... can SKS tell me if Walsden Street and Crabtree Lane are close to one another in Prestwich? as I don't have access to a 1901 Map... I do know that the Fraser family moved to Salford but not sure where the Gravels lived.. I think Prestwich as my hubby's mother Edith Gravel was born there 1904.

If there are any living descendants from either families I would love to hear from you...

Kind Regards
Faysie- in Oz.

Hi there , it might be worth a look at these site for any living or buried family members?
http://www.burialrecords.manchester.gov.uk/RegList.asp

http://www.192.com/search/search.cfm

http://www.historicaldirectories.org/hd/findbyperiod.asp

I did look on some maps i had , but they were from the 1960/70's  and both the streets you wanted were not on them for Prestwich but did find both of them in Clayton Manchester.
I had a look on Kelly's 1929 street directories but only one street was on it (Crabtree Lane ) but yet again it was in Clayton?
I also had a look on the 1900/01 telephone directory , but none of them were on that .
Sorry i could not give you much help.

hello Migky.

Thank you so very much for your reply... perhaps I have it wrong ( which is very possible...Perhaps Clayton Manchester is where I should be looking.???..It does sound very familiar my hubby say's...
Both the Fraser & Gravel Families came over to Australia and a " Fraser" son married a " Gravel" daughter...

Alexander Fraser's Death Cert states he died 3 EldonStreet Salford. 1899 and then Sarah Fraser ( nee Berry) moved back to Bollington Cheshire with  her 3 daughters..

The 1881 UK Census has some incorrect information.

Alexander ( Head) was not born Salford. that's what I am trying to find out.??? It is so confusing on each of the Census reports.. On one Census it looks like Llymonsdale ? I have tried Selmersdale- Lunesdale with no luck at all and do not kow where else to look...

. Their children were...

Emily was born Salford
Hugh was born 11 Cnr June & Dixon Street West. Salford. 05 Dec 1876- this is our direct line.
Joseph was born Salford
Sarah E - was born Salford
Annie was also born Salford.

There was another " Fraser" family on the UK Census who came from Toxteth Park with similar sounding Christian names.. I have researched them extensively and bought Cert's  and they are not mine..

My Family are definitely  the ones on the 1871- 1881- and 1891 UK Census..
1901 UK Census Sarah moved back to Bollington Cheshire..

I will check out the sites you have given to me and see what I can find.. but you have been a great help to me.. after so long hitting the "Hmmm Wall ". haha.

Sincerely
Fay- Australia

Had a look at the 1891 for Alex. The placename is definitely in Gloucestershire, which fits in with Joseph's birth being in Cheltenham on the 1881 sheet.

Can't decipher the placename to match modern maps though. It's probably worth a post on the Gloucestershire board to see if the locals know it.
Looking at ALSTON in south Ribble area, ALSTEAD and DONBAVAND/DUNBABIN etc. everywhere, HOWCROFT and MARSH in Bolton and Westhoughton, PICKERING in the Whitehaven area.

Census information is Crown Copyright. See www.nationalarchives.gov.uk for details.

Migky

You are spot on

Checked original census page for 1901 RG13/3766; F:12; P:15. and Crabtree lane comes under Ecclesiastical parish: Clayton St Cross  Ward:  Bradford.

Emestine Fraser 21
Hugh Fraser 24
Annie Newmann 48
Richard Newmann 13

Just realised I do not have a map of Clayton (yet) so cannot double check
