Hi pg

The marriage, as well as the births provided by Jenn and OzyBob, all come from the online NSW indexes

Births and Deaths
http://www.bdm.nsw.gov.au/cgi-bin/Index/IndexingOrder.cgi/search?event=births

Marriages
http://www.bdm.nsw.gov.au/cgi-bin/Index/IndexingOrder.cgi/search?SessionID=9698788&event=marriages

Details on transcription agents given by Cando allows you to purchase a transcription of a certificate for $AU15 - I think a certificate is about $10 more

Thanks Trish for all the links. I've found the NSW site and it's very useful, and the variations in spelling Lavery hadn't occurred to me.

John seems to have been a bit of a lad, not content with one poor wife and starving bairns in Glasgow, he gets himself another one and several more babies, born in quick succession. The deaths of the 2 boys on the same day let my imagination run wild - maybe they'd to make room for the next arrival...
I'll know once I get to read their cause of death.

Guess he escaped the parish council by fleeing to Australia! The marriage certificate could be interesting - to see whether he was listed as a Widower, divorcee or bachelor

Trish

NB Always seem to be spelling variations   :D  You can use an * wildcard on the NSW searches - it slows them down dramatically, but does eventually return an answer

Hi Jenn and Trish,
John disappears from Scottish records after the birth of his last child with Ann in 1869. Ann calls herself a widow on the 1871 census, and dies in Barnhill Poorhouse in 1872.
So I'm guessing John left sometime after 1869. On the IGL there is a child birth,1874, in New Zealand,  the John who dies with his brother in Dec 1885. The other children's births are listed on the NSW register.
I'm thinking John might have been a convict, but would he have been sent to NZ? Or maybe the IGL is wrong about little John's birthplace.
I'm hoping someone might offer to look up the details when they visit the NSW registry, or if this is this not an option, I'll get the transcription service to do it.

Your dates are too late for a convict - only WA took them post 1850 & they stopped in 1868.

Unfortunately one cannot "look up" the registers. The transcript agents (3 of them) are the only folks allowed to do this.
