Put my gt granddad to rest please. - Completed
« on: Sunday 22 July 07 23:10 BST (UK) »
My gt grandfather Joseph Richardson Caswell died between 1881 and 1896.

He was born in Gateshead in 1859 but moved to Jarrow between 1871 and 1881.

In 1881 he appears in census RG11/p5024/f95/p20 with his wife Elizabeth Cousins and his children John and Joseph and Elizabeth's brother George.

He appears on his son George William's marriage certificate in 1896 as 'deceased - Manager of a Goldmine'. There are family stories that suggest his goldmine was in South Africa so he might possibly have died there but the stories also relate that he was forced to retire when he got a sliver of metal in his eye and had to return to England.

A relative of mine has a similar story in her tree but attributed to a different person.  ;D

I just cant find any reasonable reference to his death.  :'(

There is one Joseph Caswell who died in 1884 with an estimated birth year as 1854 in Litchfield but almost every fact is so wildly out I dont think this is him.

Can anyone help?

haven't found a suitable death, but it looks like Elizabeth was still describing herself as married in 1891-and had another son

1891

James Devlin head M 37 Coal Miner Durham
Bridget Devlin wife M 26 Ireland
Elizabeth Caswell Boarder M 32 Norwich
John Caswell Boarder 12 Jarrow
George W Caswell Boarder 4 Jarrow

possible death for son Joseph (on 1881 census) ?

May narrow down the timescale for Joseph snrs death.

Thanks Suz,

All spot on, matching my guesses anyway. Nice catch on the 'M' in 1891, that does narrow it down nicely. Perhaps he was in South Africa in 1891, I certainly haven't found him in England.

So now the date range is between 1891 and 1896. That is a range I can work with.

I'll have a go on the full indexes. I'm a bit gun-shy on those right now having recently finally found the death of grandad George William (the one aged 4 in 1891) in 1943. I had to start in 1920!

Index search complete (shudder) no sign of possible mistranscriptions. Just one Joseph died 1896 aged 56 making him born 1840.

Any other idea anyone?

Wonder if the death reg you found was  a mistranscription -and age should have been 36 -not 56 -a 3 and a 5 are easily mistaken for each other!!!

What area did he die ?

Then I'll have a look to see if there is a Joseph b. 1840 on 1891 census.

Hi Suz,

The only Joseph Caswell who died between 1891 and 1896 died Q1 1896 in Prescott aged 56. The index is fairly clear.

I have no idea where he died but he was born and lived in Durham 'till 1881.

I've used all the tricks I know looking for him in 1891 but perhaps you know more.

His parents were John b1829 d1898 and Eleanor (Ellen) b1830 d1866.

Nice one mockil!

A quick search in 1891 show four Joseph Richardson's in 1891 born in Durham abt 1859 so I will have to put that down as a possible, but definitely a possible.
