1851 Census Easingwold
« on: Sunday 12 December 04 23:12 GMT (UK) »
I would be very grateful for  'look up'  in 1851 Census for the following

John SUTCLIFFE   aged about  28  Independent Minister
Harriet     "         wife                23   born Thirsk
Christiana           dau               5 or 6    born Easingwold
William                son                4 or 5   born Easingwold

They were either in Easingwold  or had moved on to Sowerby/Thirsk.    On later census I have found children at boarding schools but cannot catch the parents on a census.

Any help much appreciated.

Wilma

Hi Wilma

Sorry we haven't been able to help you so far on this one.

Have you made any progress,  or do you have any further details that could help someone to find what you are looking for?

Look forward to hearing from you.

Best wishes

Whoops, I posted this under your 1891 Census request, then realised this was the correct one.

Hi Wilma,

I am replying to this post as it seems more directly related to my query. The John Sutcliffe you have been seeking, born in Rossendale, Lancs around 1815, was I believe minister at Easingwold, Yorkshire, from about 1842 to 1851 I think. I have found some information snippets in the History of Congregationalism in Yorkshire, James C Miall, 1868. If you have not seen these I can send them to you. Google also finds it.
My wife's paternal great-great-grandfather John Germain was from the area, born in Husthwaite in 1823, apprenticed to a tanner and currier in Easingwold (present at the 1841 Census), and then migrated to Australia in 1848. We have a transcript of a letter written by him detailing his voyage, addressed to Mr John Sutcliffe, and mentioning that he was writing about his travels as he had been requested to do by Mr Sutcliffe - but no other clues were given as to why this was the case.
I thought he could be a relative, but finding your John Sutcliffe in Easingwold has caused a light bulb to shine. If you are interested in the letter I would be happy to copy it to you.
Have you found any more detail regarding John Sutcliffe since the posts here? All I know is the 1851 Census information, and that he was situated at the Peniston-Netherfield Chapel from 1851 (came from Easingwold) until replaced in 1858.
John and Harriet then appear in the 1861 Census at Chapel House, Keyworth, Nottinghamshire, with sons John aged 1, James H aged 1 month, and nephew George aged 13. Christiana 15 and Mary 11 are at the Misses Cattle's boarding school in Thirsk, Yorkshire in 1861.

Best wishes for your research,
Stewart Cameron

Thank you for sending me these details.   The family are ancestors of a friend in America.   I did the research for her.   Rev John Sutcliffe died in 1864 in Kenilworth.   It would appear that his children were all sent to Boarding schools.   Found his parents but as far as I know that is as far as it went.
I would imagine your wife's ancestor was a member of John's church and was encouraged to write to Rev John when they left.
I am not pursuing the family these days.

Thanks again

Wilma
