George Miller, birth
« on: Saturday 21 July 07 22:43 BST (UK) »
Hi
For several years I have been looking for the birth of my grandfather George Milla(e)r. Tried again to-day searched the GRO 1850-60. Sent for birth cert for a George born in Neath, wrong George.
1891 census born Cowbridge age 30yrs
1891 Mar: cert age 38yrs, trade mason's labourer
1901 census born Cambridge age 38yrs.
Found a George Miller 1850 Cambridge, checked 1861 census, wrong father. The only one left is George Miller Ely 3b 558 Jun Q 1857. The trouble is every time it is the wrong one it costs £4.50.
George's father was Thomas Miller, this is all I have to go on.
Ever little bit of help is welcome
John

If he was born in Cowbridge, then the birth should have registered Bridgend. What is Thomas Miller's occupation on his son's marriage certificate?
I can see a George of the right age with father Thomas in Swansea this Thomas is a sailor. Any use?

Hi Osprey

Georges father Thomas on marr cert was a general labourer, deceased.
The George on the 1871 census father sailor mother's name Martha. On the IGI George married a Sarah Crockford.
On the 1871 census there is a George age 13yrs father Thomas  mother Eliza, George born Newport.
1881 census George is a Iron fitter, as is his father. Mother 1871 born Birmingham, 1881 census born Gloucester, so if this is my George the family don't know if they are coming or going.
I will give it a few days to see if anyone comes up with any ideas, then take a chance and order the birth cert for Ely, Cardiff. The family did settle in that area.

Thank you for your help

Ancestry has the 1901 birthplace down as Cambridge but if you look at the actual image its Cowbridge.
Will have a look what i can find.

Checked out the two George Millers found and i dont think either are yours.
George Miller in Glou parents Thomas and Eliza,George born Newport Mon .Thomass occupations in 1871 Railway carriage Fitter in 1881 Iron Fitter.Thomas has passed by 1891 so Eliza a widow that fits the marriage cert but by 1891 George appears to be married to an Eliza and living in Glou. And Newport is 20 miles from Cowbridge where Georges says he was born in the later census.
And the other George Miller Father-Thomas Miller a Sailor .Thomas dies Qtr June 1886 age 66 so again that fits with marriage cert but according to the Igi this George married Sarah as you have found. However this is a submitted entry.
Theres a George Miller a sailor boarding  in Glou also in 1891 born Swansea in 1862.
Sorry cant be of more help. And cant find another George with Father Thomas.Think youll have to try the birth cert.Cowbridge comes under the reg district of Bridgend.
If this again is not the correct cert .I would start thinking he was possibly illegitimate and he made up his Fathers name on marriage cert.

Good Luck

Dear Welsh Lady

Haven't been on line for a while, so I am very sorry not to have  replied sooner.

The Thomas who was a sailor was also suggested to me as my Thomas, The IGI George could be if the gentleman researching this name is wrong.
I sent for a birth cert for a George born Neath, but wrong on father not Thomas. I have found another George born ELY June Q 1857, have not sent for cert yet as it cost £4 every time it is wrong.

Thought I found his death, sent for cert, died 29-8-1926 age 65yrs charge hand dry dock rigger, living Redlaver Street, West Cardiff, the informant C Miller Son. George never had a son C Miller.

Managed to find relatives of my father in Wales, but they had no news of George, which surprised me as I always thought the welsh were very, close family wise.

My father joined the Welsh Regiment when he was 18 and as far as I know never went back, he never mentioned his family to any us children .

He's out there somewhere

Thank you for your help
John
