Again great Sue. Jane was my Jane Canning she was on the 1901 census as blind and aged 78 with her son Richard in Cherington so that is perfect
John Frederick was born 1770 that gives us a step nearer finding his birth
I had the BMD entry for little Susanna its good to add the actual date and place other than Woodstock district
I have had little William's Baptism on a different thread today it turns out the family were RC which is interesting and the first I have among our huge family#And there is my Richard confirming his birth as 1809
As always I am so grateful to you and all our chatter friends

Hi everyone, I spent the afternoon looking through all the info that you have so kindly provided and have a wee look around for Margaret Nichols.

I did find her in 1841/1851 as a Publican/Innkeeper in Duns Tew, presumably following on from her deceased husband William (Innkeeper in 1838) at the White Horse as I don't believe there were any other establishments. Census info helps to flesh out some of her children and their spouses which is nice. By 1861 (aged 74) she is living by herself with a pauper lodger and next door is a similarly aged widow named Elisabeth Nichols. That now gives me another avenue to look down. Cant find her in 1871 yet although I believe she dies in 1876.

All very exciting!

Hello Sue,

Thanks, that is of immense help! You been able to confirm some info I had been given a decade ago but with no sources available.

The Robert and Elizabeth NICHOLS you mentioned appears to be Williams brother and his family. I'd hope that they might show the following children in the Duns Tew PRs?

Robert married to unknown 28 Dec 1798 (wife #1)
Caralinah Nichols bap 24 Nov 1799
Maria Nichols bap 28 Oct 1804
Mary Ann Nichols bap 25 Jan 1807

Robert married to Elizabeth Wells 22 Apr 1811 (wife #2)
Elizabeth Nichols bap 05 Feb 1812
Emma Nichols bap 28 Nov 1813
Caleb Nichols bap 12 Apr 1816
Joshua Nichols #1 bap 21 Jun 1818 bur 11 Apr 1819
Eliza Nichols bap 20 Sep 1821
Hannah Nichols bap 20 Sep 1821
Joshua Nichols #2 bap 18 Aug 1824
Sophia Nichols bap 18 Sep 1828
Edwin Henry Nichols bap 2 Oct 1831 bur 04 Apr 1832

Tree,

So it seems that the Nichols family were at the White Horse from 1825 with William through to Margaret in 1854, then your John Canning in 1855, then John Nichols from at least 1861-1881 (with daughter Ellen a barmaid in 1861). Does anyone know of any other resources or references around the history of the White Horse? :)

Most appreciated, Steve

Popping in briefly Oh gracious I have a family of Messer who some times use Mercer I'll check for a Mary
I think we need the RO for the quarter sessions and victualers cognisance's that will tell us who held the licence and when. The  Historical Directories site has not got anything on Duns Tew before the 1852 Gardener which we have already seen I  think there are some directories on An...ry will take a look I wonder if the Horse is mentioned in Victorian Britain ? but we really need further back I'll check to see if the Oxford RO catalogue is on line or else we need a trip to the RO I may be able to fit a quick trip in fairly soon.
H
Added my Mercer/Messers in Duns Tew
William m Betty CLAY 4 Oct 1795 Duns Tew
they had 9 children between 1796 and 1817 all in DT
but I have William bap 16 Aug 1767 in Sandford St Martin no parents named just "Base Born" I wonder if he was Mary's brother or cousin oh my how these families intertwine William and Betty are my direct line I need to get to the RO and see if there is a bastardy order for him.
I need a marriage for Henry CLEY/CLAY and Martha DAWS about 1740 if any one knows it please and a baptism of Francis CLAY about the same time.
