Morning all,
I sent a reply to the query from Carol  under Mentmore heading several minutes ago but have a feeling it has gone astray, my apologies if this information is posted twice.

Morning Carol,
John VARNEY married Sarah BRAIN in Great Tew 17 Sep 1791,(O.M.I.); their first born was ch. in Hook Norton 6 Nov 1791, the only one of that surname in the PR.
I then checked all 19 PR's on my hard drive from Bletchingdon to Yarnton - found several families with this surname or variant but not a trace of John or Sarah anywhere.
I still have numerous microfiche to check which could take some time but thought I would pass this info to start with.
Will get back to you later.
Still collecting pictures of pubs I see Hazel  ;D.
Take care all,
Cheers,
George.

Hi there Beatles,
What information are you looking for in Ince-in- Makerfield? Let me know, I am a member of the Manchester & Lancashire FHS so could put any requests you might have on our website.
Looking forward to hearing from you, Welcome by the way to this  site and thread, I can see you making a lot of trips to Banbury :P
Most of my folks came from the Oxon area, Cumnor, Cropredy, (one lot ran the Red Lion there for some time way back) Deddington, BSJ, BSM, Wiggington etc and I have all of those PR's on microfiche but I will be asking favours in trying to clear a couple of long lasting brick walls I have in the not too distant future.
Cheers for now,
George.

For Carol,
Further update -
Banbury Baptisms 1723 - 1812 show two John VARNEY's being bapt.
17 Jan 1738/39, VARNEY, John & Sarah, s & d/o Stephen, tailor and Mary. and
7 Dec 1751, VARNEY, John, s/o Stephen, lab, and Grace.
I don't honestly believe that either of these is the John you are looking for.
Similarly another was born in Milcombe, one VERNEY, John, ch. in Bloxham, 29 Dec 1738, s/o William of Milcombe.
Although I have found the surname in several of the PR's I have examined none of them show a John & Sarah.  This pair seem to be very elusive, were they by any chance travellers or boat-people? the reason I ask is that they crossed through two other parishes from Great Tew to get to Hook Norton in the seven weeks from getting married to the christening of their first child, Sarah  was from Gt. Tew and John seemingly was from Mentmore in Buckinghamshire according to the OMI. Anyone on the thread got access to the Chipping Norton PRs as a possible location for further baptisms; I am going the other way, back to the canal system running from Williamscote north of Banbury down to Weston Green and beyond and the associated parishes until we can find a more substantial link or information
For now then,
Cheers,
George.

Hiya
for Carol
I have been to check out the PR in Banbury.

1.Found marriage of John  Varney Sept.19th. 1791 Great Tew pr reads as follows
John Liburn Varney  psh Henstone bucks  /Lic  (could be Enstone)
Sarah Brain
Witnesses :Josh Callaway
                   Henry Townsend

2.Found birth  Richard son of John & Sarah Varney 6 Nov. 1791 Hook Norton pr.

I looked through the surrounding pr working out- wards from Hook Norton and could find no other Varney  births with John & Sarah as parents.1791--1810
Wiggington X
Swerford X
Duns Tew X
DeddingtonX
Chipping Norton X
Bloxham X
Barford St. John and Michael X
Bodicote X
Broughton X
Banbury St.Marys X
Cropredy X
Finding Johns middle name may make it easier to trace them.
S :)

Hello Beatles and Frustrated Iban

Have come across your replies regarding John Varney and Sarah Braine's marriage at Gt. Tew and their son being bap at Hook Norton.
For some reason these replies were not seen by me until this evening. I have no idea where John Varney was born other than he says on the marriage register he was from Mentmore, Bucks.
Thank you for your replies, and I'm sorry that I have only just seen them.
Best wishes
Carol
