Hi Donna,

Welcome to Rootschat!

Can you suppy any more information or rough dates for your Shaw family?

I have the pre-1855 MI's for Kilsyth Old Churchyard and there are dozens of Shaws buried there. I had a wee look through them but none seem to match your John and Mary Laing.

Do you know if and how many of their 9 sons survived - or who they married?

Once we establish a time frame, it'll be a lot easier to try and track them down.

Anne

Hi Donna,

I had a wee look on the British Vital Records (the CD version of the IGI) and found that your John Shaw was born 5th February 1799 and christened on 9th February 1799 in Kilsyth and is listed as the only child born to Alexander Shaw and Elizabeth Anderson. This info is exactly the same on the online IGI.

There is a submitted entry of John's death as 9th August 1867, however this is the correct John.

The death cert states:

John Shaw, Cotton Weaver, married to Catherine Laing died 6th August 1867 at Kingston, Kilsyth aged 68. Father Alexander Shaw, mother Elizabeth Anderson, both deceased.

I have sent you a PM.

Anne

I have only just found this family, but it was on another web site. If I,m correct and these other people are correct Mary LAING's parents were John LAING & Barbara LAIRD??. This John LAING is my 5th Great Uncle.

The family are the same, BUT I am actually looking for certificates etc to confirm parents, siblings etc.

Would love to swapp notes etc with you if you are keen to.I reckon I can put you in contact with other people to if we can verify parents etc.

Hi Donna, have also just noticed you have a Mary LAING born 13th August 1805, sorry that might be the wrong MARY Laing, as this Mary MARRIED William WEBSTER. The Mary you want was born 13th April 1806, as her parents were John LAING & Barbara LAIRD.

The Shaw who was the piano tuner was Al Shaw from Kilsyth.
He also had a band called Al Shaw and the Bluebirds who played in Kilsyth and Kirkintilloch Miners Welfare.
I think Tiger Shaw was a footballer with Rangers.
