Tullyneuh, County antrim - is there such a place?
« on: Sunday 12 December 04 18:13 GMT (UK) »
I'm attempting to find Orr and McCaughey relatives from around Ballymena. I have come across Sir Samuel McCaughey 1832 - 1919) who was a wealthy grazier, irrigator and philanthropist in New South Wales, said to be a cousin of my ggrandmother. He is said to have been born in Tullyneuh, but I have been unable to establish where this is - any thoughts?

I have continued to try find a place or property called "Tuyllyneuh" in County Antrim without success. I have only an extremely limited knowledge of the County at present. I am sure many of you are much better versed in place names. There are many beginning with "tully", which I understand means "hill" but none that match Sir Samuel's birthplace. I would be happy to hear a couple of "Never heard of it"s and go back to look at source documents,

have a look at http://www.yancoag-h.schools.nsw.edu.au/history.htm which appears to be the life of the gentleman you mention .... this site also appears to state that Tullyneuh is in Derry in Northern Ireland .

Thankyou, Falkryn, for your posting. This site is indeed where I found the reference to Tullyneuh, but have still not been able to find any reference to a Tullyneuh in any county in Northern Ireland. Where did you find a reference to County Derry? The only one I could find by googling was a query from someone also researching McCaughey's in Australia. Unfortunately her email address is no longer current.

I wondered if there may have been a mistranscription of Tullyneagh, like the Lough, but that is in County Armagh. I have read elsewhere that Sir Samuel was bron near Ballymena and this fits with family lore.

I am awaiting an interlibrary loan which may help.

Thanks again for your posting.

:-[  My apologies ... I misread a posting on Rootsweb which asked the question "Is Tullyneuh in Derry"  ... rather stupidly not reading it as a question  :-[

The synopsis of the book "The return to Coree" which gives details of his life refer to Charles and Alexander Wilson who were among the first generations of what is described as the dynasty to go over and who were related by marriage to Samuel  BOTH of these men are stated to have come from Ballycloughan near Ballymena .....  if related by marriage is  it possible that the  marriages occurred before they went to Australia and this may then fit in with the information you have?

Thank you Anthony and Falkrin. The book "Return to Coree" is the one I am waiting on on interlibrary loan. I have now found a rootsweb list reference to Samuel McCauhey's gravestone which reads: "Sir Samuel McCaughy Born 30 Jun 1835 Tullynuey House, Ballymena,Ulster died 25 Jul 1919 at North Yanco, New South Wales." But "googling" Tullynuey brings no joy either. I am used to using www.old-maps.co.uk but this does not include Ireland. Does anyone know of an Irish equivalent? Or a site via which I could contact someone with local knowledge?

thanks
