RYAN-Galway
« on: Wednesday 18 July 07 17:04 BST (UK) »
I am researching the family of my grandfather ARTHUR EDWARD RYAN b 1901 in Galway city. He married my grandmotherVIOLET ESTHER O'SULLIVAN  in Stretford near Manchester in 1929. Arthurs father according to the marriage certificate was MICHAEL RYAN, Club Steward. My mum thinks he was a steward in a snooker hall in Galway and he lived in Church St/Road! Arthurs siblings that we know of were, VIOLET RYAN. ETHEL RYAN and ROSE RYAN. There may have been more children as yet we dont know. In Ireland and England Arthur was a bus driver, rumour has it he was the first bus driver to drive a bus from Dublin to Galway, I dont know how true this was. My gradparents at some stage came into possession of an island in Lough Corrib and sold it for £300! where they got it from or from whom we dont know either. As an after thought my mum seems to think Arthurs father was known as EDWARD, she doesnt remember him being call Michael. Michael/Edward was married twice we dont know to whom either times.
If anyone knows of this family I would love to hear from you, because what I have written is all I know.

Jacqui.

I have since found out it is definitely Michael Ryan. He was club steward at the Mechanics Institute on Middle St, Galway. He was married to Mary Honaria Burke (1st wife) Michaels parents were Martin and Bridget Ryan nee Butler.

Hello,
I've just read your post, and my great grandmother's name was Rosannah Gannon (nee Ryan) I think known as Rose or Rosa and I think she was from Galway Her and her husband Thomas Gannon were living in Warrington Cheshire in 1861 /1871 census. I think she may have been living in Liverpool before then coming from a large family. They had 3 children Michael, Martin and Ellen (my grandmother)
Sorry I don't know any more.

Hi Pat,

Thank you for replying. The Ryan surname is quite common in Galway, and as I havent got much further back I wouldnt like to say if they were connected or not. I will keep a note and you never know!

Happy hunting
