A Dissident Vicar
« on: Tuesday 17 July 07 17:08 BST (UK) »
During my research, I have traced a member of my family who was Vicar of Holy Trinity Church Hull.
He was the Rev. Burnett and was listed as the Vicar during 1720, and then was listed as dissident and his name removed.

Can anybody help with the term "dissident Vicar"

Thankyou

A dissenter, in a religious context,  was someone who did not conform to the doctrines of the Church of England.

Thankyou Stan for the reply.

It seems then that he must have ceased conforming during his period as Vicar and so was removed.

I have come across this happening in the village where my ancestors lived in the 19 century when the Church of England curate in the parish left to found a Moravian community in the village. It caused an enormous stir which makes very interesting reading.

I think circumstances must have been similar for my Rev'd Burnett.

Thanks for the info. Stan

Thats ok Nick, it really divided the community and makes fascinating reading especially as the curates father remained the vicar of the parish so things were not good between father and son.
